All 8 MCU Actors Who Voice Their Own Characters In What If Season 2

The first season of What If…? was released in 2021, and it quickly became a fan-favorite show thanks to the bizarre alternate universe storyline and refreshing animated sequences. Therefore, Marvel fans are ecstatic as they learn that Season 2 is coming this December, with even more chaotic Multiverse stories to share from the Watcher.

The only downside to What If…? is that most of the superheroes and villains we know and love from the MCU aren’t voiced by their live-action actors. For examples, Mick Wingert replaces Robert Downey Jr. to voice animated Tony Stark, and Lake Bell voices Black Widow instead of Scarlet Johansson.

While these voice actors aren’t bad, it just doesn’t feel the same when your favorite superheroes aren’t voiced by their performers. However, rest assured, as there are still some MCU actors who both play the live-action and animated versions of their characters, and they’ll make a return in What If…? Season 2. Let’s learn about them below.

#1. Chris Hemsworth (Thor)

Everyone’s favorite Odinson, Thor, has been performed by the muscular and witty Chris Hemsworth since 2011. It’s safe to say that the role has given him the popularity he has today.

While both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have retired from the MCU, Chris Hemsworth is still looking forward to a potential Thor 5 movie. He even voices the God of Thunder in the animated series What If…?, and is set to return in the second season as part of the 1988 Avengers team.

#2. Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter)

Fun fact, Hayley Atwell has played not one, nor two, but at least three different versions of Peggy Carter in the MCU. First, she plays Earth-616 Peggy, who’s Steve Rogers’ confidant. Second, she plays Captain Carter in Earth-838, who later gets brutally killed by a rampaging Scarlet Witch.

And last but not least, she portrays Captain Carter in What If …?Season 1. In this alternate timeline, Peggy took the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, thus becoming Captain Carter. In Season 2, Atwell will return as Captain Carter, teaming up with the Hydra Stomper piloted by Rogers himself.

#3. Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier)

You may not have noticed, but Stan’s time in the MCU is even longer than Chris Evans himself, having been with the saga ever since 2011. The actor also voices Bucky Barnes in What If…? series, and will reprise his role for the second season. He’s expected to resume his identity as the Winter Soldier in Season 2, as shown in the trailer.

#4. Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange)

The charismatic Stephen Strange is portrayed wonderfully both in the live-action and the animated versions, and it’s all thanks to the immense talent of Benedict Cumberbatch.

In What If…? Season 1, Strange Supreme dooms his entire reality to save his loved one, and transitions into a powerful villain. Therefore, it’s exciting to see what Season 2 has to offer to this complex character.

#5. Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch)

The Scarlet Witch may have deceased in Earth-616 timeline, but Olsen’s adventure with the MCU is far from over. The talented actress will continue to voice Wanda in What If Season 2, and fans are on their feet to see which version of her will show up this time. And hopefully, Elizabeth Olsen can return to the MCU in a very near future.

#6. Michael Douglas (Hank Pym/Ant-Man)

It’s a shame that Paul Rudd won’t return in What If Season 2, but fans can rest assured, as the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym will be a part of it. And of course, Michael Douglas, who has been playing the live-action version since 2015, will voice the animated one as well.

What If…? Season 2 will feature a younger Hank Pym, who’s a part of the 1988 Avengers team. Let’s see what the actor has in store for the upcoming show.

#7. Laurence Fishburne (Bill Foster/Giant-Man)

Many may not remember, but Fishburne used to star in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), playing Bill Foster, Ghost’s mentor. In What If…? Season 2, Fishburne will voice the animated version of Bill, this time donning the identity of Giant-Man. He’s also part of the 1988 Avengers alongside Hank Pym, his old business partner.

#8. Cate Blanchett (Hela)

Hela’s fate from the original MCU timeline is sealed in Thor: Ragnarok, but the malevolent character will make her return in What If…? Season 2. And of course, the legendary Galadriel herself, Cate Blanchett, will reprise her role as the villain. Needless to say, Marvel fans screamed their lungs out when they saw Hela putting on her iconic villain garb again in the trailer.
