In an incredible tale of survival and resilience, a 13-year-old golden retriever named Stella has made a triumphant return home after enduring 65 days alone in the vast wilderness of Alaska.

According to the local news outlet KCAW, Stella's adventure began on a fateful July 4th when fireworks startled her, prompting her to dash into the woods, away from her family in Sitka.

At that time, she was hanging out with her family—Sarah and Jerome Mahoskey and kids Kai and Quinn—on the back deck of their Sitka home.

The Mahoskey family tirelessly searched for Stella, fueled by worry and the unsettling news of a bear attack in the area. With each passing day, the chances of Stella's survival seemed uncertain.

"They said, 'Did you hear that there was a bear that attacked a dog last night? We had the windows open in the back of the house, and my wife heard this altercation that sent chills up her spine. And basically, I don't think your dog could be alive,'" Sarah recalled to KCAW.

However, the family's determination paid off when they located the resilient pup last month. Stella is now happily reunited with her family, marking the end of a harrowing journey and the beginning of a well-deserved recovery in the warmth of her loved ones' care.

Despite the odds stacked against them, the Mahoskey family clung to hope during the long summer months, refusing to give up on the possibility of finding Stella alive.

Their persistence paid off with a pivotal phone call from Tim Eddy, a friend of Jerome's working in the quarry in early September.

Tim informed Jerome that he might have found a golden retriever, sparking a mix of anticipation and disbelief.

"He said, 'Do you have a golden retriever?' And Jerome said, 'Well, we did have a golden retriever.' And he says, 'Well, I think this is your golden retriever,'" Sarah explained.

Rushing to the quarry, Jerome laid eyes on Stella, perched on a cliffside amidst ash and rock that perfectly camouflaged her golden fur.

While the details of Stella's journey remain a mystery, the Mahoskeys suspect her familiarity with the quarry, shaped by years spent around Jerome's excavation business, played a role in her navigation.

After Over Two Months Away From Home, How Is She?

After over two months away from home, Stella was down to 30 pounds—nearly half her body weight. Sarah said she likely subsisted by foraging. "She has always picked her own berries when we are out hiking," the pet parent explained. "And she loves dandelion roots."

A gaping gash on her left side hinted at possible encounters with the wild, perhaps a bear. Remarkably, this wasn't the first time she was part of a remarkable survival story; back in 2015, she survived a landslide that crushed her owner's truck, defying the odds.

Stella is already on the road to recovery, having gained 11 pounds since her homecoming. Her tale joins a lineage of resilient golden retrievers, as a blind golden retriever survived three weeks in the woods before reuniting with her family in 2022.
