Officers Form A Line To Honor K9 With Terminal Cancer During Her Last Walkout

K9s are truly amazing furry friends, always putting their all into keeping our neighborhoods safe. We cherish these beautiful dogs and are immensely grateful for their daily hard work in ensuring our peaceful lives. And when the time for retirement or facing health challenges comes, we believe that they should have received the farewells they truly deserve. It's an amazing way to show how much they've meant to their friends and the communities they've safeguarded.

Recently, there was this incredibly touching moment when a K9, who wasn't feeling too well, received a heartwarming farewell from fellow officers. They look like one big, loving family, and this wonderful K9 dog plays a significant role in their family.

Candy is a dedicated police K9 who has served for nearly 10 years at the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.

She had been an essential part of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, serving as their first narcotics detection dog since 2014. This amazing canine had conducted thousands of operational searches, helping seize a substantial amount of illegal narcotics. In her almost decade of service, she performed over 2,900 operational searches, helping to seize 278 pounds of illegal narcotics, according to the sheriff’s office.

Candy's bond with her handler, Master Deputy II Anthony “Tony” Natalzia, was incredibly strong. They were inseparable, with Candy accompanying Natalzia on duty every day.

“She went everywhere with me,” Natalzia told McClatchy News. “You see these dogs more than you see your family.”

Recently, Candy's health began to get worse.

With nearly a decade of dedicated service at the office, she has diligently carried out her tasks. However, lately, her coworkers have noticed signs of her declining health. She developed a limp, lost her appetite, and was diagnosed with widespread cancer.

“It was in her lungs, it was everywhere,” Natalzia said. “The vet said there was nothing they could do and I couldn’t even comprehend it – we had only gone for a routine visit.”

With a heavy heart, Natalzia knew that the compassionate choice was to take Candy to the vet to be euthanized and minimize her suffering.

But before saying their final goodbye, the police department organized a touching farewell for Candy.

On Monday, officers lined the halls of the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, forming an honor guard to salute the retiring K9 as she left work for the last time. Candy gripped her favorite tennis ball as she made her way through the corridor. It was an emotional moment for the entire team.

After the ceremony, Natalzia took her to the vet, where she was peacefully euthanized.

Candy was scheduled to retire this year, and Natalzia regretfully wishes they could have spent more time together post-retirement.

“You think you’re going to have some time with your dog after they retire so I feel cheated on that end of it but as a responsible handler there was no way I could let her suffer to be selfish,” he shared.
