I Couldn’t Sleep After Seeing This: Stray Dog Hanged By China School Security Guard To “Protect” Students

A school security guard in China has sparked outrage across Chinese social media for committing a cruel act during a college celebration. The incident occurred at Liaoning Advertising Vocational College in Shenyang, in northeastern China's Liaoning province, as the school commemorated its 30th anniversary.
A distressing photo was shared on social media, depicting the security guard standing beside a Golden Retriever-like dog that had been hanged by a rope. The shocking image left many wondering how someone could carry out such a heartless act.
“I couldn’t sleep after seeing this. I want to know how someone could do such a cruel thing? ” said the image poster.

The poster image defended their right to do so and criticized the school for disabling comments beneath the post. They pointed out that the school's lack of action was the real issue at hand.
In response to the growing public outcry, the college released a statement on its official website on October 21. The statement acknowledged that one of their security personnel had acted inappropriately when handling stray dogs, resulting in the death of a dog and the subsequent negative reaction. The security personnel responsible were dismissed.
The school emphasized the importance of compassion among its staff and recognized the need for better education and management of security personnel. They offered their deep apologies and pledged to enhance training, improve work methods, and upgrade campus management.

While some people on mainland social media understood the security guard's intentions to protect students from a stray dog, they could not condone the killing of the animal.
In response to mounting public pressure, several local governments in China have taken steps to enhance the management of dogs, particularly focusing on stray and pet dogs.
These measures include conducting inspections of pet dogs, imposing penalties for prohibited breeds, and enforcing leash regulations for dog owners.
A recent incident at Chongqing Technology and Business University, where a security guard captured and killed a stray dog, triggered outrage among the student body. In response, the school suspended the security guard, citing inappropriate behavior during the disposal process.

Prominent Chinese figures, including actress Cya Liu Ya-se and celebrity Yang Di, have used their platforms to advocate for animal welfare. They emphasized that not all stray dogs are problematic and called for an end to the killing of animals.
Simultaneously, various regions are actively implementing initiatives to shelter and manage stray dogs to reduce the risks associated with unattended dogs. For instance, the Pingxiang City Canine Inspection Center in Jiangxi Province has taken in over 180 stray dogs.
Chengdu has established a dog management coordination group that involves multiple government departments to address the issue of stray dogs and uncivilized dog ownership practices. These coordinated efforts aim to protect both humans and animals while promoting responsible pet ownership.
