This 79-Year-Old Diver Has Had Adorable Friendship With A Fish For Nearly 30 Years
An exceptional friendship defies the usual boundaries between humans and marine creatures
During one of his dives over 25 years ago, Hiroyuki Arakawa encountered Yoriko. Their connection is so profound that a simple tap on a piece of metal near a shrine summons Yoriko to Arakawa's side.
In a video, Arakawa and Yoriko share a gentle kiss, symbolizing the depth of their unique companionship.
Yoriko, the Asian sheepshead wrasse, has a face that, from a specific angle, bears an uncanny resemblance to a human. What makes this underwater friendship even more enchanting is Arakawa's claim that Yoriko recognizes him. It’s like they share some inside joke or secret understanding.
“I guess she knows that I saved her and that I helped her when she was badly injured. I think anyone can get an animal’s attention by feeding them,” he went on explaining.
Decades have passed since Yoriko’s health struggles, but she’s thriving. With limited information on their lifespan, Asian sheepshead wrasses can reach 3.2 feet.
A study even revealed that fish are capable of facial recognition
In a captivating study, these aquatic marvels showcased their extraordinary ability to recognize human faces by spitting water at chosen images on a monitor. The surprising twist? Even when faced with new faces, the tropical archerfish accurately identified the previously learned visage, surpassing expectations.
Despite having simpler brains compared to humans and lacking the specific brain section dedicated to facial recognition, these fish demonstrated remarkable visual skills.
A researcher from the University of Oxford highlighted that fish, with their simpler neural structures, are ideal candidates to explore whether basic brains can excel in complex tasks.
As we Marvel at the aquatic feats of tropical archerfish, the underwater realm continues to reveal the unexpected. Meanwhile, a unique group of individuals possesses superhuman abilities, effortlessly navigating depths up to 200 feet below the ocean's surface for an astounding 13 minutes.
What seems like a result of dedicated training turns out to be a natural prowess akin to the lives of our underwater friends.
