'Madame Web' Character Explained: Is Ezekiel Sims A Villain?

The narrative unfolds with Ezekiel Sims as a rival clairvoyant, directly opposing Cassandra Webb (Madame Web). The trailer unveils a future where Ezekiel is targeted by three emerging Spider-Women — Julia Carpenter, Anya Corazon, and Mattie Franklin — all dressed in their iconic costumes. The present-day Ezekiel, aware of his future, embarks on a mission to alter destiny, setting the stage for a clash with the Spider-Heroes. It seems that Ezekiel Sims will become the main villain of the Madame Web movie, though his exact motives and moral inclinations remain to be seen.

In Marvel Comics, Ezekiel Sims first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #30 (2001), created by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita, Jr. Unlike his cinematic counterpart, comic Ezekiel is not a villain but serves as a spiritual mentor to Peter Parker. His powers, obtained through a ritual in a Spider-Temple in Peru, align him with the cosmic concept of "spider-totems."

Ezekiel's primary role in the comics is to protect Spider-Man and other spider-totems from the threat of Morlun, a vampiric being seeking to consume the life forces of all Spider-heroes across the Spider-Verse.

However, the Madame Web movie takes a stark departure, presenting Ezekiel as a rival clairvoyant and the primary antagonist within Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Unlike his comic book counterpart, this live-action Ezekiel appears darker and with a more sinister motive. The trailer hints at a complex storyline where Ezekiel, portrayed by Tahar Rahim, hunts down Spider-Women, played by Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, and Isabela Merced, in an attempt to alter their destiny.

In the comics, Ezekiel possesses powers comparable to those of Spider-Man, including strength, agility, spider senses, and the ability to adhere to surfaces. However, Madame Web's trailer hints at additional powers, such as clairvoyance on par with Cassandra Webb. Ezekiel Sims in Madame Web is portrayed by French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim.
