To Saddler's surprise, the first guest to grace the nesting box wasn't a winged creature at all. Expressing his bemusement on social media, Saddler sighed, "This is not what we were hoping to attract when we installed nest boxes."
Arming himself with binoculars for a closer inspection, Saddler discovered his unwelcome guest—a cat comfortably settled inside the nesting box. As an avid birder, he immediately felt concerned about the potential threat the cat posed to local wildlife. Especially since the cat was a stranger in his neighborhood.
Quickly, Saddler snapped a picture of the cat's cozy residence and posted it to a local community group, hoping to reunite the furry squatter with its family. It turned out the cat had a home, and its owner was looking for him everywhere. Quickly, the cat owner came to bring him home.
“I’m very happy to report that rather than being a free-roaming or stray cat, [he]’s an indoor cat which slipped out last night and ran off …” Saddler wrote in an update on X. “[T]he cat’s owner came and got [him].”
In the end, it was lucky that the cat avoided another night in the wild, and Saddler's feathered friends could once again enjoy their safe spot in his yard. And for an animal lover like Saddler, there’s no better feeling than knowing everyone in his community is safe and sound.
