In June 2016, a horse fertility specialist named Dr. Patrick Brogan was called to a farm in the Netherlands to help Zindita, a retired showjumper, give birth. He realized she needed assistance because she wouldn’t be able to birth the foal naturally.
And despite his efforts, the foal was stillborn. She was understandably heartbroken.
A couple of days after the sad incident, Dr. Brogan got a call about another horse, Tolanda, who had passed away during childbirth, leaving her newborn orphaned. The vet decided to introduce the orphaned foal to Zindita, and something truly special unfolded.
From the moment Zindita and the orphaned foal locked eyes, a special bond began to weave itself into their lives. Despite Zindita's recent loss, her maternal instinct kicked in, and she embraced the foal as her own. She was “in love and desperate to take her in,” said Dr. Brogan.
Dr. Brogan captured a moment just an hour after their introduction. It immediately went viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views and shares.
"Two days ago, a group of people came together, working as a team... Saving a mare in labor but losing the foal... Today a group of people, working together, the same mare as two days ago, was introduced to a foal who had lost her mom. This picture was taken an hour after the introduction. It speaks for itself," he wrote.
