Marvel’s first-ever TV-MA-rated show, Echo, will follow Echo/Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), the adoptive daughter of Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), after the events of Hawkeye. Lopez was last seen seeking revenge on Kingpin after discovering his involvement in her biological father's death. The stakes are higher than ever in Echo.
The show features a stellar cast, including Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. A recently released trailer shows Daredevil back in action, facing off against Lopez in what promises to be a dramatic showdown. Keep reading for everything you need to know about Marvel’s Echo.
#1. Where And When It Will Be Released?
The upcoming series Echo is scheduled to premiere on January 9, 2024, and will be available for streaming on Disney+. What's exciting is that all six episodes will be released simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.
#2. Is There A Trailer For Echo?
The first preview for Echo, which was released on November 3, 2023, reveals that Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio), will be making a return, sporting an eyepatch. Fans of the Hawkeye series may recall Maya (played by Alaqua Cox) taking a shot at Kingpin off-camera in the final episode. She found out about Kingpin’s deception, manipulating Hawkeye into unintentionally causing her father’s death.
This series will revolve around the relationship between Maya and Kingpin, shedding light on their backgrounds in a way that hasn't been seen before. It promises to explore the world of street-level heroes, with Echo’s storyline offering a new perspective on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing audiences to a whole new dimension of characters and stories.
#3. What Will Echo Revolve Around?
Echo will likely take place after the events of Hawkeye and will follow Maya Lopez as she navigates the world. The Disney+ series has stayed true to her comic book history, including the sixth episode cliffhanger, and this means that the story of Cox's Echo is just beginning.
By the end of Hawkeye, Maya had not yet taken on the name of Echo. Similar to how WandaVision showed how Wanda Maximoff became The Scarlet Witch, the series will probably explain how she adopts the name of Echo. The official synopsis from Marvel's website states that the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown.
She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward. Hawkeye ended with Maya shooting Kingpin, although it is highly rumored he isn't dead, but instead, she blinded him. This will likely be a major part of the series.
Also, in the comics, Maya Lopez is the first person to take on the mantle of the hero Ronin. While the MCU established Hawkeye is wearing the suit, it would be fitting if she takes up the mantle in the series. It shows her arc from originally hating the name Ronin and wanting revenge to adopting the moniker herself.
#4. Who Are In The Cast Of Echo?
Hawkeye marked Alaqua Cox's acting debut, so her return to helm her own solo spinoff series is incredibly exciting. Echo's cast consists of several Native American and Indigenous Canadian actors, including Devery Jacobs, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene, while Zahn McClarnon will also reprise his role from Hawkeye as William Lopez, Maya's father and the former leader of the Tracksuit Mafia.
It is likely that McClarnon will only be featured during flashback sequences, as William Lopez was killed during the Blip by Clint Barton while he was operating as the vigilante Ronin who was in turn tipped off by Wilson Fisk himself. Vincent D'Onofrio is set to return as Kingpin in Echo, despite his fate being left uncertain after he was shot by Maya in Hawkeye.
Following previous appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Charlie Cox will also be reprising his role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Echo meaning the show could establish Daredevil and Kingpin's rivalry in the MCU ahead of their next appearance together in Daredevil: Born Again. Murdock is rumored to be searching for a missing Jessica Jones in Echo, so it is possible that Krysten Ritter could reprise her role from Netflix's Jessica Jones, though this has yet to be confirmed.
#5. What Makes Echo Different From Previous Marvel Movies?
This series is a significant moment as it's the initial project released under Marvel Spotlight, a banner dedicated to shows within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that focus more on characters and grounded storytelling rather than the usual cosmic themes.
What makes this series even more unique is the collaboration with the Choctaw Nation, which played a significant role in bringing Marvel Studios' Echo to the screen, adding depth and authenticity to the storytelling.
