Approaching the final stretch of the 26.2-mile race, Bohan was on track for a personal best marathon performance when she spotted something unusual.

While running on the left side of the road near the sidewalk, she entered a tunnel and noticed a small, fluffy cat crying and scared on the sidewalk. This unexpected encounter set in motion a heartwarming rescue during a major sporting event.

Sarah Bohan made an incredible decision during her race to stop to help this small kitten while knowing that even a brief delay might risk her record time.

“I didn’t even think twice,” Bohan said. "I scooped up the cat.”

From there, Bohan’s priority was the frightened kitten’s well-being. She slowed her pace to a walk so he wouldn’t be jostled.

“That cat became my responsibility,” she said. “I needed to give it the love it deserved.”Bohan walked about a mile with the kitten in her arms until she caught the attention of fellow animal-loving spectators who volunteered to give the little cat a loving home.

“I didn’t know them,” Bohan said. “They just came forward and said they have cats of their own and will give this little baby love. I trusted them based on our very brief interaction.”

Trusting the strangers based on their shared love for animals, Bohan continued her journey to the finish line, having made an unexpected but heartwarming detour during the marathon

Following her compassionate act during the Chicago Marathon, Sarah Bohan's concern for the kitten's well-being extended beyond the race.

Even though she didn't exchange information with the individuals who volunteered to take in the kitten, PAWS Chicago provided a heartwarming update, announcing that an adopter was found.

“Adopter found!” the group wrote. “We hear [the kitten] is settling into his new home and doing great!”
