Besides the annual MCU titles, Marvel fans are also looking forward to several upcoming Sony movies in Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. The latter is especially anticipated, as it will tell the story of not one, but five different Spider-Man variants, with Cassandra Webb/Madame Web (Dakota Johnson) being the main protagonist, alongside three other Spider-Women.
It’s still more than one month away from Madame Web’s theatrical release date, and we already have some exciting updates as of now. Recently, Cassandra’s official costume in the movie was revealed, and the community had some pretty positive feedback about it. This makes us even more hyped about the upcoming movie, even though Peter Parker isn’t likely to be in it.
#1. Madame Web’s New Official Outfit Is Revealed In A Very Unconventional Place
The official costume for Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web is unveiled by an X account named Spider-Man News. However, the costume isn’t revealed on an official poster or cinematic trailer, but on…a bottle of Ocean Spray with the character on it.
On the crumpled bottle, Cassandra Webb is seen wearing a body-tight spandex suit on her body, much like Peter Parker. The overall color theme for the costume is red, with black and white webbings all over the torso. A small spider logo is placed in the center of a white cobweb in the middle just like other Spider-Variants. Cassandra’s face is visible as she doesn’t wear a mask.
#2. Is The Sony Outfit Any Different From Its Comic Counterpart?
Compared to Madame Web’s official costume in the comics, Sony’s new suit has the same color scheme and size, however, the torso’s design is quite different. In the comics, Cassandra’s torso has a large white (or occasionally red) spider in the center, but the Sony version is much smaller in size. The comic suit also doesn’t have much webbing design, but the Sony suit has plenty.
Moreover, since Cassandra is blind in the comics, she always wears a red blindfold over her eyes. However, this blindfold is nowhere to be found on the bottle, which makes sense since Sony’s Cassandra still has her vision. Her film suit also lacks the blue element from other Spider-Man variants.
Another picture of the new suit can be found on Short Hand Stories website, which sees Madame Web standing in the middle of a cobweb, with her trademark red theme behind the back.
#3. What’s The Internet’s Reaction To Madame Web’s New Outfit?
The Internet is quick to heap praise on Madame Web’s new suit. The outfit’s overall red theme is a nice nod to her comic counterpart, and some minor tweaks have been done here and there to give the suit a fresher look. Dakota Johnson’s beauty also helps bring out the suit's vibrant theme.
The only criticism so far about Cassandra’s suit is how the spider logo in the middle is too small, even to the point of barely visible. However, this is only a minor detail, and Sony still has time to patch it up before release.
#4. The Rest Of The Spider-Women’s Outfits Don’t Get The Same Treatment
Upon Madame Web’s outfit reveal, Redditor u/NotMeAgain999 also makes some similar edits to other Spider-Women’s attires. This includes Sydney Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter, Celeste O’Connor’s Mattie Franklin, and Isabela Moner’s Anya Corazon. These three will encounter Dakota Johnson later in the movie and soon awaken their arachnid powers. Their official costumes were first revealed in the official trailer.
However, unlike Cassandra’s, the other Spider-Women costumes weren’t very well-received by fans, who deemed they were too cartoonish and unrecognizable. The eyemasks receive the most criticism, as people claim their designs look too ridiculous.
