Alyssa Berkovitz's journey into the great outdoors took an unexpected turn with the arrival of Kernel, her Great Dane. Before Kernel, Alyssa found herself confined to long hours at a desk, a common plight for many.
“Kernel was also a figment of my imagination at the time—I had him all picked out, named, and ready in my head for at least five years before I got him!” she shared.
The pair bonded instantly and started exploring hiking trails together whenever Alyssa had free time and needed a break from the screens. Kernel, not just a pet but a companion of her dreams, provided Alyssa with the motivation to break free from the sedentary routine.
As their adventures unfolded on hiking trails, Alyssa noticed the transformative impact on Kernel's well-being. While Kernel attended daycare, Alyssa felt the experience didn't align with her vision for his growth. This realization sparked the idea of establishing Wagnificent Co., an off-leash dog-walking program, in 2017.

Through this venture, Alyssa and Kernel have led a pack of furry friends on explorations around the Boston area, overcoming initial challenges to create a fulfilling and enriching experience for both dogs and their human companions.
The beginning wasn’t easy, as some of the dogs needed special preparation to be able to enjoy the outdoors safely: “I knew this meant I would need a niche group of dogs, but I committed to the idea in 2017, and it’s been fulfilling for us since.”

It’s no wonder that such a good boy caught the attention of other people, like the adorable elderly couple, Cal and Wanda, who loved hiking in the same area. Alyssa vividly recalls the moment she first spotted the couple in the woods, with Kernel drawing them in with his friendly demeanor.

Cal, unfortunately, passed away shortly after forging a friendship with Kernel. However, Wanda continued to embark on hikes, seeking the companionship of her furry friend and the cherished memories of walks with her late husband. Much to her delight, she met the pack and confessed that she was looking for them.
“When we saw the lady in the woods again, she said, ‘Oh, I came out here to look for you!’ So I said, ‘Okay, let’s exchange information,’” Alyssa felt like Wanda, who is now known as Grandma on their social media, was a missing member of the pack.
Now, Grandma joins the hikes at least once a week, showering affection on all the dogs in the daycare. While every dog earns her pats, Kernel remains her undisputed favorite, capturing her heart with his irresistible charm.
