Mama Dog And Her Babies Are Finally Safe After Hurricane Harvey

Emma Ackerman

Protecting her children comes naturally to any mother in the world, regardless of their species. And so it was when Hurricane Harvey hit Harris County, Texas, that a courageous mother dog did everything she could to face the rising floodwaters and protect her four tiny puppies.

One by one, she brought them to a house and started carrying them up to the porch, eventually capturing the attention of a couple living nearby. They just couldn't ignore the struggle of this new mom battling the elements, especially when the kind couple are welcoming their own baby soon.

So, they took in the family pups and provided them with abundant love and care. However, as if the flood wasn't challenging enough, a chemical leak during the flooding seemed to have a bad impact on their health.

Recognizing the need for immediate action, the couple quickly rushed the mama dog and her pups to the Rescue and Reunite Center. This center is a collaboration between the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and Best Friends, promising to offer the best care for the mom and her little ones to overcome their difficult circumstances.

Upon arrival, Best Friends volunteers wasted no time bathing the furry family to cleanse them of any chemicals from the flood. During this process, they observed the weak state of the mom's body, which was made worse by the flea infestation, and came to the conclusion that this would require more than a couple of baths to solve it all.

After a thorough cleaning, a volunteer veterinarian conducted a medical exam, bringing good news – with flea medication and proper nutrition, the mom would soon regain her health. The family was then relocated to a special area away from other animals, receiving dedicated care from Best Friends staff and volunteers. In this safe haven, finally, the puppies had their chance to fully flourish under the love of their devoted mom.

“She is the best momma,” said Peggy Kennedy, a Best Friends volunteer helping out in the center’s puppy area, where some of the smallest and most vulnerable animals affected by Hurricane Harvey can be kept healthy. “She’s been able to get some rest, and she just loves taking care of her babies.”

In the end, while Hurricane Harvey might have brought huge challenges to this mama dog and her puppies, a brighter chapter has taken place. And the sun is finally shining on them, marking the end of their worst days and a promising beginning to a better life.
