Death Row Puppy Trembles With Fear And Too Afraid To Move After Months In Shelter

Reece, a 7-month-old black and tan German shepherd mix, has arrived at the Riverside County Animal Control Shelter since September 30, 2023, after being found wandering the streets of Jurupa Valley.

This 28-pound dog is facing challenges adjusting to shelter life. The prolonged stay has taken a toll on him, with visible signs of kennel stress. So, immediate rescue is crucial for this pup in need.

Kerri S. Mabee, deputy public information officer at Riverside County Department of Animal Services, shared: "Reece was impounded at our shelter on September 30 after he was found roaming the streets. At that time, Reece was struggling to understand how to walk on a leash and was reluctant to interact with humans.

Despite the shelter team's hope for improvement, Reece continues to face social challenges.

"As a pup, we were hoping to see Reece's behavior turn around. However, Reece's social skills appear to remain a challenge for him in the shelter environment at this time," she added.

On Instagram, the @savingriversideshelterdogs account, run by dedicated volunteers, shared emotional footage of Reece huddled in the shadows of his kennel, clearly distressed by the challenges of shelter life.

"Reece has completely shut down after being passed by for 50 days. He is so scared, he won't even move in the play yard. He is just a baby! Scared, alone, confused... We are begging somebody to save his life and give him the best life moving forward!" the volunteer wrote.

The story reveals a harsh reality. Around 920,000 surrendered animals face euthanasia each year.

But shelters persevere in their mission to minimize this heartbreaking fate. Adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering initiatives, and behavior rehabilitation programs were created, offering hope to those caught in the complex web of shelter life.

Despite gaining attention online, Reece is still searching for someone willing to give him a forever home.

People express understanding of the fear in Reece's eyes, acknowledging the challenging reality of shelter life. "No wonder he's scared," said one commenter. "It's scary in there. He is a clever boy and knows he's in danger."

While another wrote, "Oh my goodness! Please, let's help this sweet Reece."
