A contractor in Missouri found some unexpected visitors scurrying around his job site
In the realm of construction sites, where meticulous attention is paid to every detail, contractors often find themselves donning multiple hats—from material assembly to wildlife monitoring. If a safety hazard is identified, they stop everything to address it.
Recently, a Missouri-based contractor embarked on his usual workday routine, ready to tackle the tasks at hand. Little did he know that his day would take an unexpected turn when he stumbled upon some unexpected visitors scurrying around the job site.
Upon closer inspection, the diligent contractor discovered a family of squirrels navigating the construction zone. Recognizing the potential safety hazard for both the furry intruders and the ongoing work, he promptly halted operations to address the situation. The man ushered a family of squirrels to safety before opening a new can of foam insulation.
Unbeknownst to the worker, there was one stray squirrel left behind
However, the unexpected twist occurred when the contractor, preoccupied with sealing gaps using a can of foam insulation, unwittingly left one curious squirrel behind.
As he shook the can and directed the nozzle towards a crevice, a spray of white, resin-based foam emerged. Little did he realize that one squirrel, attempting a daring escape, would leap directly into the wet foam.
The poor squirrel was suddenly covered from head to toe in a substance that promised to dry like concrete. The contractor, with nimble fingers and a keen eye, removed as much foam as possible from the now white-coated squirrel before rushing the little adventurer to the Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center (MWRC).
The squirrel was still caked in foam, but the construction worker’s quick thinking made a huge difference
Upon the squirrel's arrival at MWRC, it was evident that the construction worker's prompt intervention had made a significant difference. While the critter was still adorned in patches of stubborn foam, the quick removal efforts meant that the rescue team had a more manageable task at hand.
The challenge now lies in determining the most effective and gentle approach to cleansing the squirrel from the remnants of foam.“
At the Center, the animal care team worked against the clock to carefully remove the foam using cotton swabs and vegetable oil before it fully hardened,” MWRC wrote.Opting for a staged approach, the rescuers administered pain medication and a mild sedative to calm the squirrel.
They began the process by swabbing his mouth and nostrils, ensuring unobstructed airways for comfortable breathing. Progressing carefully, they delicately cleaned his eyes and removed the foam from areas that might impede his movement.
The first day's efforts were marked by the removal of as much foam as possible, followed by the administration of fluids and a cozy place for the squirrel to snuggle for the night.
The next morning brought a continuation of the swabbing process, and by the second day at the rescue center, the resilient squirrel emerged foam-free. Despite the raw and red patches on his skin from the foam, his demeanor perked up right away.
MWRC has high hopes for the squirrel’s recovery, no matter how long the road ahead might be
While the healing journey for the squirrel is still in its early stages, the caring team at MWRC is delighted to report that he is thriving with each passing day.
“We are still keeping a close eye on his condition, and he has a long way to recovery, but we are amazed by his current progress,” MWRC wrote on Facebook.
The Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center (MWRC) holds optimistic expectations for the ongoing recovery of the resilient squirrel. Their ultimate aspiration is to witness the day when the squirrel can once again experience the freedom of running through the wild.
Until that moment arrives, the dedicated team at MWRC is committed to providing the adorable and almost-fluffy survivor with the care, attention, and support he needs. Each day spent in the nurturing environment of the rescue center contributes to the squirrel's healing and brings him closer to the prospect of rejoining the natural world.
