Today, let’s meet an old bear named Toshka, who spent most of his life stuck in the circus, working for humans. It wasn't until 2020, at the age of 25, that he received a golden ticket to retirement at a sanctuary in Satanov, Ukraine.
"Most of his life, he was a circus bear, and the last owner transferred him to us for rehabilitation and life support," shared the sanctuary, describing Toshka’s situation.
During his time adjusting to his new life in the shelter, a heartwarming video surfaced, melting the hearts of thousands. It featured Toshka sitting in the sun like a boss, enjoying what seemed like his own little shower.
When Toshka first arrived at the sanctuary, he wasn't Mr. Social at all. Terrified of humans, he preferred to stay hidden, likely haunted by his traumatic experiences from the circus. Back then, doing tricks was the only thing he could do and was forced to do.
“A month ago, we transported him and three other bears. Toshka was very afraid of people: he didn’t leave the bushes for two weeks,” shared the sanctuary during a 2020 interview.

However, everyone was overjoyed that, after about two weeks, he finally felt the love and warmth of the sanctuary and gradually adapted to his entirely new life.

Fast forward to today, and Toshka's fear of people is just a thing of the past, all thanks to some serious, tender, and loving care from everyone at the sanctuary. He’s now in his best years ever, enjoying what he missed for those long years. No rope, no cage, no punishment—just grass, trees, and fresh air.
“Care and attention melted his heart. Now his favorite pastime is to shower in the sun. He takes a sitting position and is ready to sit for hours,” said the sanctuary.
