Dracula Untold 2 Release Date Update: Are There More Untold Vampire Stories?

It's almost a decade, but there has been no news on Dracula Untold 2 release date. In 2014, Dracula Untold arrived with much anticipation, positioned as the cornerstone of Sony's ambitious yet ill-fated Dark Universe. Despite its underwhelming box office performance and critical reception, fans of vampire cinema continue to ponder the possibility of Dracula Untold 2. The film concluded with a tantalizing cliffhanger, suggesting a potential continuation in the modern era.

But does Dracula Untold 2 stand a chance of materializing? Let's delve into what we currently know about the long-dead sequel and its possible revival.

Dracula Untold 2 Release Date Update: Will There Be A Sequel?

A Dracula Untold 2’s release date hasn't been revealed just yet, and the simple answer is that it's probably not happening.

Originally envisioned as the inaugural entry in Universal's Dark Universe, a cinematic universe featuring classic Universal monsters like Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man, Dracula Untold faced a mixed reception from both critics and audiences. Universal then pinned its hopes on The Mummy (2017), starring Tom Cruise, as the official Dark Universe launch. However, this venture also failed, both critically and financially, effectively killing the Dark Universe's future.

Since those setbacks, Universal has kept mum about Dracula Untold 2 and has not clarified the Dark Universe's status. Instead, the studio has chosen to produce standalone films centered on its monster properties, such as The Invisible Man (2020), which achieved both critical acclaim and box office success.

Especially given Luke Evans' involvement in other projects, such as Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Netflix's Murder Mystery (2019), the prospect of a Dracula Untold sequel appears increasingly unlikely.

Dracula Untold 2 Cast: Luke Evans' Return to the Sequel

If a Dracula Untold 2 were to materialize, it would be nearly unthinkable without Luke Evans reprising his role as Vlad/Dracula. Evans was the highlight of the lackluster first movie. He's also expressed eagerness to return for a sequel, stating in a 2014 interview with Screen Rant, "There’s definitely room for more Dracula stories. I think he’s an endlessly fascinating character."

Nonetheless, Evans recognizes that the fate of Dracula Untold 2 lies beyond his control, as revealed in a 2017 interview with LRM Online: "I think it was a really enjoyable process for me. [...] I’d love to bring him back in some concept or context but honestly, you know as little as I do when it comes with what is going in on [with] the dream rooms of Universal Studios."

If a Dracula Untold sequel happens, other key cast members who might return include Sarah Gadon as Mirena/Minerva, Vlad's wife who meets her demise in the first film but reappears in the modern era; Dominic Cooper as Mehmed II, Vlad's erstwhile friend, and Ottoman sultan turned foe; Art Parkinson as Ingeras, Vlad's son who ascends to the throne of Wallachia; and Charles Dance as Caligula, the ancient vampire who transforms Vlad into Dracula and mentors him.

What's In Store For The Dracula Untold Sequel?

Continue where the first movie left off: In a potential Dracula Untold 2, the story may pick up where the first film left off, with Vlad encountering Minerva in London under the watchful gaze of Caligula. This sequel could delve into Vlad's adaptation to the modern world, and his reunion with his wife's reincarnation. Furthermore, the sequel could introduce iconic figures from Dracula mythology, including Mina Harker, Jonathan Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Renfield, and Lucy Westenra.

Continue the history of Dracula: Alternatively, Dracula Untold 2 might opt for a different time period, focusing on Vlad's adventures and struggles across various historical eras, especially those with ties to Dracula’s legends, such as Wallachia and Transylvania. This approach could uncover Vlad's transformation into Dracula, his influence on vampire legends and folklore, as well as his encounters with a diverse array of supernatural phenomena and beings. Such a sequel could also set the groundwork for other films within the Dark Universe, should Universal choose to revive it.

▲ Interview with the Vampire (1994):

  • IMDb: 7.5/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 63%

This film, based on Anne Rice's novel, traces the life of Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt), a vampire who shares his tale with a journalist (Christian Slater). It begins with his transformation by Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise) in 18th-century New Orleans and unfolds as he traverses Europe and America alongside Lestat and their vampiric child, Claudia (Kirsten Dunst). While the adaptation censored a lot of content from the book, the gothic and glamor are brought to life by the great actors.

▲ Underworld (2003):

  • IMDb: 7/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 31%

The inaugural installment in a franchise spanning five films and a spin-off, this movie introduces Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire warrior entangled in a forbidden romance with Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), a human pivotal to ending the age-old feud between vampires and werewolves.

▲ The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023):

  • IMDb: 6.1/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 49%

In 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' (2023), a chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula comes to life in a way that feels like an Alien-inspired thriller, shrouded in the same thick dread that blankets the moors. It pays homage to the brooding horrors of Hammer films and offers a visually stunning interpretation of the tale, compensating for its lack of surprises with abundant style and genuinely chilling moments. For those who savor intense scenes and an eerie atmosphere, this suspenseful movie will definitely be a joy to watch.

▲ Renfield (2023):

  • IMDb: 6.4/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 58%

Renfield (2023) reimagines the vampire genre, starring Nicholas Hoult as Dracula's loyal servant R.M. Renfield, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. After centuries in servitude, Renfield seeks a life beyond the shadows of the Prince of Darkness. This thrilling blend of horror, comedy, and action offers a fresh alternative to Dracula Untold. With a star-studded cast, including Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, and Nicolas Cage, Renfield promises an exciting and unique cinematic experience for vampire enthusiasts.

Bonus point: The movie, and Nicolas Cage as Dracula, out-performed Dracula Untold so much that plans for a sequel are rumored to be underway, ending hope for the Dracula Untold reimagine of the bloody count.

Currently, there's no news about the Dracula Untold 2 release date. Many fans of the original film are eager for this sequel, but it appears unlikely. Universal hasn't shown interest in continuing Vlad the Impaler/Dracula's story or clarified the Dark Universe's fate due to its abysmal performance at the box office.

However, fans of the bloody count could still get their new vampire fix this year. Sony's recent film, "Renfield," offers a fresh perspective on Count Dracula, featuring humor alongside the gore. It outperformed Dracula Untold, thus seemingly pushing the possibility of Dracula Untold 2 even further away. For now, fans can only hope for a revival of Dracula Untold 2 or enjoy other vampire movies on DVD or streaming platforms as they wait.
