Dracula Untold 2 Release Date Update: Are There More Untold Vampire Stories?

A Dracula Untold 2’s release date hasn't been revealed just yet, and the simple answer is that it's probably not happening. 

Originally envisioned as the inaugural entry in Universal's Dark Universe, a cinematic universe featuring classic Universal monsters like Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man, Dracula Untold faced a mixed reception from both critics and audiences. Universal then pinned its hopes on The Mummy (2017), starring Tom Cruise, as the official Dark Universe launch. However, this venture also failed, both critically and financially, effectively killing the Dark Universe's future.

Since those setbacks, Universal has kept mum about Dracula Untold 2 and has not clarified the Dark Universe's status. Instead, the studio has chosen to produce standalone films centered on its monster properties, such as The Invisible Man (2020), which achieved both critical acclaim and box office success. 

Especially given Luke Evans' involvement in other projects, such as Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Netflix's Murder Mystery (2019), the prospect of a Dracula Untold sequel appears increasingly unlikely.

If a Dracula Untold 2 were to materialize, it would be nearly unthinkable without Luke Evans reprising his role as Vlad/Dracula. Evans was the highlight of the lackluster first movie. He's also expressed eagerness to return for a sequel, stating in a 2014 interview with Screen Rant, "There’s definitely room for more Dracula stories. I think he’s an endlessly fascinating character."

Nonetheless, Evans recognizes that the fate of Dracula Untold 2 lies beyond his control, as revealed in a 2017 interview with LRM Online: "I think it was a really enjoyable process for me. [...] I’d love to bring him back in some concept or context but honestly, you know as little as I do when it comes with what is going in on [with] the dream rooms of Universal Studios."

If a Dracula Untold sequel happens, other key cast members who might return include Sarah Gadon as Mirena/Minerva, Vlad's wife who meets her demise in the first film but reappears in the modern era; Dominic Cooper as Mehmed II, Vlad's erstwhile friend, and Ottoman sultan turned foe; Art Parkinson as Ingeras, Vlad's son who ascends to the throne of Wallachia; and Charles Dance as Caligula, the ancient vampire who transforms Vlad into Dracula and mentors him.

Continue where the first movie left off: In a potential Dracula Untold 2, the story may pick up where the first film left off, with Vlad encountering Minerva in London under the watchful gaze of Caligula. This sequel could delve into Vlad's adaptation to the modern world, and his reunion with his wife's reincarnation. Furthermore, the sequel could introduce iconic figures from Dracula mythology, including Mina Harker, Jonathan Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Renfield, and Lucy Westenra.

Continue the history of Dracula: Alternatively, Dracula Untold 2 might opt for a different time period, focusing on Vlad's adventures and struggles across various historical eras, especially those with ties to Dracula’s legends, such as Wallachia and Transylvania. This approach could uncover Vlad's transformation into Dracula, his influence on vampire legends and folklore, as well as his encounters with a diverse array of supernatural phenomena and beings. Such a sequel could also set the groundwork for other films within the Dark Universe, should Universal choose to revive it.

There is no official trailer for Dracula Untold 2 yet, as Universal has not confirmed or announced the film. However, there are some fan-made trailers on YouTube that imagine what the sequel could look like, using footage from the first film and other movies and shows featuring Luke Evans and vampires. Bonus point: The movie, and Nicolas Cage as Dracula, out-performed Dracula Untold so much that plans for a sequel are rumored to be underway, ending hope for the Dracula Untold reimagine of the bloody count.

Currently, there's no news about the Dracula Untold 2 release date. Many fans of the original film are eager for this sequel, but it appears unlikely. Universal hasn't shown interest in continuing Vlad the Impaler/Dracula's story or clarified the Dark Universe's fate due to its abysmal performance at the box office.  

However, fans of the bloody count could still get their new vampire fix this year. Sony's recent film, "Renfield," offers a fresh perspective on Count Dracula, featuring humor alongside the gore. It outperformed Dracula Untold, thus seemingly pushing the possibility of Dracula Untold 2 even further away.
