What If…? Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, And Everything We Know

Lucas Aquino

Coming out after The Marvels, What If…? Season 2 is officially the final MCU title of 2023. The first season, which was aired in 2021 on Disney+, was a huge commercial success due to its refreshing animated style and overall intriguing theme.

Therefore, the expectations are high for the sequel, as we Marvel fans are all looking forward to what ridiculous Multiverse stories the Watcher has for us this time. And, without further ado, let’s dive right in to learn everything you need to know about the upcoming series: its release date, trailer, plot, and cast roster. Buckle up, Avengers!

#1. What If…? Season 2’s Release Date

The second season of the animated MCU series will be released on Disney+ on December 22, 2023, just in time for your yearly Christmas festivities. Just like the first season, the sequel will also release one episode each day until December 30. What If…? Season 2 will have 9 episodes in total, each around thirty minutes.

Another great news for the series fans, is that a potential Season 3 has been renewed by Marvel. The show’s executive producer, Brad Winderbaum, shared with Collider that he wanted to make What If…? an annual release.

#2. What If…? Season 2’s Cast

The majority of the superheroes and villains in What If…? Season 2 will be voiced by their respective voice actors from Season 1. This means we’ll be hearing Josh Keaton as Steve Rogers, Lake Bell as Black Widow, and Mick Wingert as Tony Stark again. Jeffrey Wright will also reprise his role as The Watcher, the one who overlooks the Multiverse in What If…?

Besides, some of our favorite actors from the original MCU will be back to voice their animated versions as well, so fans have all the more reason to be excited. For example, Hayley Atwell is back for Captain Carter, Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as the Scarlet Witch, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.

Some other fan-favorite MCU performers, such as Sebastian Stan, Cate Blanchett, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, Evangeline Lily, Josh Brolin, and Samuel L. Jackson are said to return as their respective characters as well.

#3. Where Can I Watch What If…? Season 2’s Trailer?

The official trailer for What If…? Season 2 was released by Marvel Studios earlier this month on November 16th. The trailer gives us a much closer look into the series’ roster and potential storyline for each episode.

The much-anticipated trailer accumulated over 6.6 million views after a week, with generally positive reactions from the audience.

#4. What Will The Second Season Be About?

From what we’ve seen from the trailer, it seems that What If…? Season 2 will feature some bizarre storyline just like the first. Firstly, we have the Avengers team in the 90s era, with familiar faces like Howard Stark, Hank Pym as Ant-Man, or Laurence Fishburne as Giant-Man. They’ll team up to restrain a 9-year-old Peter Quill, who recently discovered his Celestial powers.

Another storyline suggests that Nebula, now a part of the Nova Corps, is going on a mission to find a certain someone. Meanwhile, Tony Stark is cast on a barren island alongside Gamora, Valkyrie, and the Grandmaster. In other stories, we have Hela and Strange Supreme making their return, Wanda Maximoff teaming up with the Ten Rings, and Captain Carter to travel the Multiverse with The Watcher.

#5. A Brand-New MCU Original Hero Will Appear In What If…? Season 2

What If…? Season 2 also introduces to us a brand-new MCU superhero, Kahhori. Unlike the rest, Kahhori is an MCU original character, who was a member of a Mohawk tribe in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Kahhori will gain her cosmic powers thanks to the Tesseract falling to Earth, allowing her to open space portals and such.

It’s exciting to see what Marvel Studios has in store for this character in the show, and how she’ll propel forward in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What’s the thing you look forward to the most in What If…? Season 2? Which character do you think will appear? Tell us more in the comment section.
