Why Was 'Willow' Show Cancelled? Is There Any Chance It Will Return?
Disney+ has ended Willow, the series that finally debuted late last year after years of development and brought Warwick Davis' sorcerer back to screens 35 years after the original movie, much to the disappointment of fans.
The Disney+ series from creator Jonathan Kasdan was set years after Queen Bavmorda was defeated and followed a group of rag tag heroes set off on a quest far away from their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world. However, the series did not have a similar cultural impact as the original movie. While the cast and crew hoped to explore more of the world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the house of mouse has different plans.
Kasdan wrote the pilot and served as showrunner and executive producer alongside Wendy Mericle, Howard, and writer Bob Dolman. It was reported previously that Kasdan had been pushing hard for another season for the series, even adding a tag to the end of the show itself teasing more stories, though Willow remains an important IP for Lucasfilm and could be revisited in the future. The series casts Warwick Davis as Willow, Ellie Bamber as Elora Danan, Ruby Cruz as Princess Kit, Erin Kellyman as Jade, Tony Revolori as Prince Graydon, Amar Chadha-Patel as Thraxus Boorman, and Dempsey Bryk as Prince Airk, among others.
“Willow” continued the story of the film of the same name, with Warwick Davis returning for the series in the title role of Willow Ufgood. The show was originally reported as being in the works at Disney+ back in 2019 and ordered to series in late 2020.
Along with Davis, the cast of the show included Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel, Dempsey Bryk, and Joanne Whalley. The official logline for the series states “In a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.”
Jonathan Kasdan developed the series for television. He also served as co-showrunner with Wendy Mericle. Ron Howard, who directed the original film, served as executive producer via Imagine Entertainment. Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm also executive produced along with Michelle Rejwan. Bob Dolman, the original film’s writer, was consulting producer. Lucasfilm and Imagine produced.

#1. Why Was Willow Show Cancelled?

According to Deadline, the show didn't meet the company's threshold in terms of buzz (viewership figures tend to be an arcane mystery at Disney+) and with the Mouse House looking to cut costs on streaming in search of profit, Willow appears to be a victim of that – it wasn't a cheap show to make and hasn't performed on the level of, say The Mandalorian. However, the brand has been able to chart out quite a sizable universe on Disney+ under the leadership of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, making series like the Pedro Pascal-led The Mandalorian, which is currently airing its third season, Temuera Morrison’s Book of Boba Fett, which was basically The Mandalorian 2.5 and is still looking for a Season 2 confirmation, and upcoming features like Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka, Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, along with a slew of animated features.Kasdan wrote the pilot and served as showrunner and executive producer alongside Wendy Mericle, Howard, and writer Bob Dolman.
