The story "My So-Called Death" introduces us to Maddie Nears. A teenager has gone missing, but we all know she was killed. Of course, Maddie is more than just her current circumstances. There were people she cared about whom she abandoned. Here we have Xavier, her lover, who displayed odd behavior in the hours leading up to her death. Those with plans with her included her best pals, Simon and Nicole. The three friends often gather to watch a scary movie and talk about life after Split River High School.
And Sandra, her alcoholic mother, really needs her help. As the show develops, we find she will remain at her high school until Maddie accepts her death and moves on. Yet she has no plans to let up until she discovers who murdered her. At the end of "My So-Called Death," we've picked up three key pieces of information that will carry over into the next episode. Maddie's lost phone, jewelry, and bag serve as the impetus for this revelation.
They did not see her murder since they were not in the boiler room then. The premiere of School Spirits reveals the first item on Maddie's missing items list. Still, it's not good news for Xavier, who was already under suspicion from Simon and Nicole due to the strange circumstances surrounding him and the cheerleader, Claire.

Xavier was having an affair, and Maddie had no idea. After seeing him sitting in his truck, Claire asked if he needed anything. He brushed it aside, and Maddie didn't even notice, but then he sent the wrong message to Claire when he told her not to meet him in the parking lot. Since he had sent Maddie the message meant for Claire, he decided to steal her phone from her backpack during study hall. To keep his infidelity from being discovered by Maddie, Xavier wished he could return the text he'd just sent her.
He felt horrible about keeping her stolen belongings after she disappeared, but he had no idea what to do. His secret (at least regarding possessing Maddie's phone) was revealed when the phone flew out of his bag during a struggle with Simon. Towards the episode's conclusion, we discover that Xavier's dad is the local sheriff and plans to get his son out of the jam he's created for himself. At the end of "My So-Called Death," Maddie is also on her way to getting some help.
She had spent the whole day attempting to draw attention to herself, but no one seemed to notice until minutes before her vigil when Simon, having been soothed by their instructor, suddenly seemed to see her.
