Until this point, Jepp's coach, who had convinced him to join the Last Men—had been taking the kudos for his success. One of the guys then told Jepp that his kid was a hybrid and that he had been arrested and slain.
He knew it was true when he tore open the package and saw the contents. His wife may have already passed away because he lost everything he sought. And now, in the dead of night, Jepp's automobile gives out, and he races to the zoo in search of Gus. He won't let Gus go unguarded for a second longer than necessary. Jepp uses flare gunfire to communicate with Abbot's troops. He plans to expose Aimee's burglary plan if he can retrieve Gus.
Before Bobby can find out if Gus is okay, he has to come out of the soil in front of the whole army. After seeing Bobby call him "Big Man," Jepp quickly recognizes Bobby's friend Gus. Before they can harm Bobby, Jepp fights off the troops, but he is kidnapped in the process.
