The Avoca Mines served as the backdrop for many battle scenes. Even though it has been closed since 1982, the mine continues to represent a substantial threat to the surrounding neighborhood. Despite the importance of this location to Avoca's history, it is not a place visitors should go.
Because the program was shot in this location, Viking longships were regularly spotted off the coast of Wicklow, namely between Black Castle and Brittas Bay. The waters of Blessington Lakes are used in several of the series' boating scenes, serving as the backdrop for these scenes. Blessington Lakes, which includes a land area of 5,000 acres, was formed due to the construction of the Poulaphouca Dam and the hydroelectric station fifty years ago. The Powerscourt Waterfall measures at an impressive 397 feet, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Ireland (121 meters).
