A New Way To Embrace Auschwitz

Unlike conventional Holocaust films, Glazer takes a unique approach by focusing on the life of Rudolf Höss, the Auschwitz commandant, and his family, who live in a luxurious house adjacent to the concentration camp.

Based on Martin Amis' 2014 novel, Jonathan Glazer took creative liberties by transforming the fictionalized characters into real-life historical figures, including German SS Officer Rudolf Höss, who served as Auschwitz's longest-serving commandant and was executed for war crimes in 1947. Just after the Cannes premiere of the movie, Martin Amis passed away on May 19, 2023.

The film explores the banality of evil as the family goes about their daily routines, oblivious to the horrors occurring just beyond their walls. Glazer's filmmaking style is precise and assured, creating a devastating impact through subtle details and muted dialogue.

After 10 Years, John Glazer Unveiled His Next Work

This marks Glazer's first feature since "Under the Skin" in 2013, known for its innovative camerawork, and this time he will also adopt a similar approach, utilizing 360-degree sets and hidden cameras to evoke a surveillance-like atmosphere.

Glazer collaborated with singer, songwriter, and composer Mica Levi, known for her work on "Under the Skin," to create a sparse and unconventional score. Levi's hypnotic, droning soundscapes are layered over the film's visuals, occasionally disrupted by faint shouts and cries that barely register.

The film concludes with a jarring piece of music that defies traditional definitions—a fusion of stylized howls and shrieks that start softly and build into a cyclonic intensity. This haunting sound lingers long after the film has ended, serving as a reminder that history cannot be easily put behind us.
