The Expendables 4 is currently set for release on September 22, 2023, across theaters in the United States, according to official announcements made by the distribution company Lionsgate.

It turns out that if you enjoy watching old men throw haymakers, September will be a pretty good month. The mob will be up against Denzel Washington on September 1 in "The Equalizer 3." A few weeks later, the Expendables will continue where Washington left off by killing every bad guy they come across.

Lionsgate officially published an online trailer on June 7, 2023. The trailer opens with Megan Fox's Gina and Jason Statham's Lee Christmas engaging in some rather crude foreplay before Lee receives a visit the following morning from Sylvester Stallone's Barney Ross.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Can't Stop" is played as the trailer transitions to a montage showing some of the film's exciting action sequences.

Stallone will reprise his role as Barney Ross, the team's manager. Statham plays Lee Christmas, while Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture are additional revolving Expendables cast members.

A few new well-known actors are also joining the cast, including Transformers franchise veteran Megan Fox, who is rumored to be playing a member of the team with romantic ties to Statham's Christmas. Tony Jaa, a legend in Thai martial arts, and rapper/actor Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson have also joined the team.

Iko Uwais from The Raid, who will play the lead villain, is arguably the most intriguing new addition. Along with Levy Tran and Jacob Scipio, Oscar nominee Andy Garcia plays the member of the team that presents the Expendables with the plan and joins them on the mission.

Barney Ross and his band of assassins will hunt down an arms dealer who controls a sizable private army in the fourth film in the series. We already know that Barney, Lee, Gunner, and Toll will resume their original positions and, as usual, embark on another perilous and explosive mission with the assistance of a few new members.

Furthermore, we know that Lee's persona will command attention. By the end of the story (or halfway through), Ross may die, or he may retire and hand the team's leadership to Lee.

The official plot synopsis from Lionsgate reads:

“A new generation of stars joins the world’s top action stars for an adrenaline-fueled adventure in The Expendables 4. Reuniting as the team of elite mercenaries, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Sylvester Stallone are joined for the first time by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Iwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia.

Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give “new blood” a whole new meaning.”

The Expendables series debuted in 2010, introducing characters such as Barney Ross, Lee Christmas, Gunner Jensen, and Toll Road as a group of elite mercenaries who take on various assignments and missions from government agencies around the world, such as assassinations, rescue missions, and more.

These four main characters are central to all of the stories. Each of the series' first three installments features a new mission, carried out by a different group of mercenaries, but all led by Ross, Christmas, Gunner, and Road.

Will ‘The Expendables 4’ Be Rated R?

Yes, Expend4bles will be rated R, as were the first two films in the franchise. While the first two Expendables films were both R-rated, the third film was rated PG-13 in order to broaden the franchise's audience to a younger generation, much to the chagrin of fans of the first two films.

In an ironic twist of fate, Expendables 3 ended up being the franchise's lowest-grossing film, grossing only $214.7 million worldwide, compared to the first film's $274.5 million and the second film's $315 million.

After the third film's poor reception, Stallone stated that future installments in the series would be R-rated, saying:

“Absolutely unequivocally yes. I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again.”
