Smitty is still angry after fifty years. He gives Dan a $6,000 check to help with the mortgage, and then he tells everyone at The Lobo that Dan ripped him off. Dan, who is angry, insists on a fight, but Smitty won’t get into it. He instead offers $2,000 to anyone who will fight Dan for him. The last time Dan saw Bobo was when he knocked out his lights in Season 1 of Roseanne. Bobo then steps up and offers to beat Dan up for free. Dan is lucky that Jackie, a former police officer, is there to remind Bobo of his long list of crimes. That alone is enough to make the drugged-up bully back down.
After he left Lanford, Smitty went into the pool supply business and made much money there. But when he was younger, he was like Dan: a blue-collar kid who liked Roseanne. He even took Roseanne to homecoming, where she went home with Dan and embarrassed him.

Dan tells Louise later that he is jealous of Smitty. Smitty didn’t end up with the girl, but he did build a huge business. On the other hand, Dan is still having trouble making ends meet. (Let’s remember he never won the Illinois State Lottery, either.)
The next day, at the funeral of their teacher, Dan gets a letter he wrote to himself in high school. It turns out that it’s just what he needs to feel better. He realizes that he did well in life after reading it. Even though he didn’t have much money, he could rest easy knowing that he turned out to be a better dad than his dad.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that Dan does cash Smitty's check for the mortgage. Smitty discusses it with him, but he doesn't become irate. He visits Dan's home to express his regret for his previous actions and to give Emma Kenney the chance to reprise her role as her former Shameless father.
