What Is The Plot Of The Canterville Ghost?

The original The Canterville Ghost tells the story of the Otis family, who move into the Canterville Chase and meet several strange phenomena caused by a ghost called Sir Simon de Canterville. However, the Otis are far from frightened. On the contrary, they even caused the ghost some serious trouble, especially the Otis twins with their antics.

The animated version will likely adapt most of the events in the short novel, with a few twists and turns. We might get to see a deeper look into Sir Simon’s backstory, and how his relationship with the Otis, especially Virginia and the twins, would turn out. The Duke of Cheshire will also have a more prominent role in the upcoming movie.

For a ghost movie, The Canterville Ghost has a vibrant color scheme, including Sir Simon himself. However, the art and animation are deemed “outdated” and “robotic” by a number of audiences.

The original project for The Canterville Ghost was actually greenlit more than a decade ago, with a planned release date in 2016. However, due to multiple unexpected delays, the movie was halted until this day.

The 2023 version isn’t the first cinematic adaptation of the novel either. The first movie was made way back in 1944, followed by a Soviet animation in 1970, and a Bollywood film in 2008. The latest adaptation is a live-action TV series in 2016, which lasted 4 episodes.
