Succession Season 4 Episode 4 Recap And Explained: A Coronation Demolition Derby

If you want to have some Succession Season 4 Episode 4 spoilers, here is for you. And needless to say, recaps are full of spoilers. Life as a Roy, in a nutshell: The wedding was so sad, and the wake is so funny. This episode tells a number of stories, in contrast to the singular focus of "Connor's Wedding." So let's do a quick summary, and then we'll work through the stories one at a time.

#1. Succession Season 4 Episode 4 Recap

This week, the Roy family is still reeling from the death of Logan and attempting to figure out what to do next. Shiv is revealed to be pregnant, and Kendall visits Logan's townhouse for a memorial service. There, he finds Marcia, who claims she and Logan were still in contact everyday. Roman and Shiv are skeptical, and Roman notices some of the ATN anchors there, remarking that Logan was planning to fire some of them. Shiv realizes they are about to witness a battle for the interim CEO position between Frank, Karl, and Tom. Karl quickly shuts down Tom's suggestion, pointing out that the board may see him as an outsider with no one to back him, as Logan is gone and his own wife doesn't support him.
Roman tries to call Matsson but gets the run-around from a guy named Oskar, who relays that Gojo isn’t sure who’s running Waystar now. Connor arrives with his new bride Willa, sharing that they’re taking a honeymoon tour of a few swing states to boost his electoral chances — and he wants to buy Logan’s townhouse, too! Marcia says she’d want between 60 and 70 million, so they shake on 63. Done! Frank, meanwhile, has found a “worrying piece of paper” in Logan’s private safe: a signed letter detailing Logan’s final wishes, with a penciled-in addendum. Hmmm. Logan’s kids share a hug and Marvel at his glowing obituaries. (“Dad sounds amazing. I’d like to have met Dad.”) But Hugo pulls Kendall aside with a potential problem: Hugo’s daughter sold a bunch of Waystar stock just before Logan’s death became public… and Hugo can’t remember if he talked to her that day or not. Yeah, that sounds like it might be a problem.

Frank calls the Roy kids in to show them the letter with Logan’s final wishes… and it says he wanted Kendall to take over as CEO (!). Gerri notes it’s not legally binding, and the board will decide anyway — and it looks like Kendall’s name may have later been crossed out? (Or underlined?) But Kendall is bolstered by the revelation and now wants to be named interim CEO at least. When Shiv objects, he snaps, “It sure as f—king s—t doesn’t say Shiv.” (Greg is in the will, too, with a question mark by his name.) Kendall is left reeling, musing to Frank: “My dad wants me to take over… He made me hate him, and then he died.” But he is now picturing himself in the big CEO chair. Shiv worries that this will split the three siblings apart, and when Tom tries to comfort her, she pulls away from him. He reminisces about sending her handwritten love notes when they first started dating, but she coldly replies: “That was a while ago, wasn’t it?”

Presidential frontrunner Jeryd Mencken drops by to pay his respects, along with Sandi and Stewy, who are joined by Sandi’s dad and Logan’s old rival Sandy Furness, in a wheelchair but still alive and kicking. Kerri shows up, too, and has an awkward altercation with Marcia when she tries to go upstairs to get her things and Marcia has security physically stop her, handing her a bag of her things that spills all over the floor. Kerri weeps that she and Logan were going to get married… and Marcia says she can now go home to “her little apartment.” (Ouch.) Stewy comforts Kendall, who tells him about Logan’s wishes and asks for his backing as CEO. “What’s in it for me, Ken?” Stewy pointedly asks. Kendall pulls Roman and Shiv aside, and they both want to be CEO themselves, and neither of them wants Ken to be CEO. Well, then. Kendall is OK with sharing the CEO title with Roman, but he hesitates to bring in Shiv, too. “Three is a bit wonky,” Roman agrees. They promise to bring her in on all big decisions, though; it’ll be “equal as f—k,” Kendall vows. Yeah, right.

#2. Succession Season 4 Episode 4 Explained

Episode 4 opens with the Roy siblings in their separate dwellings, concerned about their father’s death (or in Roman’s case, brushing his teeth like any other morning). Shiv gets a call telling her the amniocentesis looks great. In a lesser, less-disciplined show, confirmation that the leading lady is pregnant would suck up the rest of the episode’s oxygen. But that’s the last we hear of Shiv finally expecting a baby this week.
Protected by his trusty sunglasses, Kendall enters the lobby of his dad’s building to hear one of the company’s PR pros, Fisher Stevens’ Hugo, shouting at his daughter’s voicemail. She’s really put the strap-on to him, (hopefully) metaphorically speaking. Exiting the elevator into Logan’s penthouse, Ken’s surprised to see his stepmother Marcia (Hiam Abbass) receiving mourners. She was supposed to be shopping in Milan forever, as we were informed in the season premiere.

“We spoke every morning and afternoon, so I came as soon as I heard,”the third wife explains. “We were very close. It was complicated. But we spoke intimately every evening.” Reeling from this TMI talk, Ken finds his brother and sister in another room. Wicked exchanges immediately kick off. “Death becomes her,” Shiv says of Marcia. “Where’s Kerry?” Ken asks about the assistant Logan cavorted with through his final days.
“In Marcia’s trunk. Inside an anaconda. Inside a sarcophagus,” Roman speculates. Shiv notes their dad’s calendar indicates he hadn’t seen Marcia for seven weeks. Ken asks if she got the “intimate calls” memo. Shiv considers suing the stepmother for the thought of Logan doing phone sex. She then suggests a huddle since, sad as the day is for some, for others it’s a coronation demolition derby.

Her estranged husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) shares a glance with Shiv before he walks into another room where the Waystar execs are gathered. They’ve got to make a recommendation to the board as to who should replace Logan, now an interim position before the still-planned sale of most of the company to Swedish tech mogul Lukas Matsson goes through. To keep their deliberations out of bereaved ears, vice-chairman Frank Vernon (Peter Friedman) suggests “looking at the china.” Tom, PR head Karolina Novotney (Dagmara Domińczyk), general counsel Gerri Kellman (G. Smith-Cameron) and CFO Karl Muller (David Rasche) follow Frank into the kitchen.
While the siblings are blowing off an over-solicitous Cousin Greg, Matsson calls Roman’s phone. Ken wants to do five — when does he not? — to get their ducks in a row before speaking to the prospective buyer. No wonder the execs are discussing the kids in the kitchen. The velvet viciousness could be cut with a no-doubt nearby chef’s cleaver.
