This episode starts with Maya who is put on medical leave due to a mental breakdown. She pushes away those who try to help her. Her wife involuntarily commits her, putting pressure on their marriage. Maya believes the commitment is just someone to blame for her failings, but Diane, the station's therapist, steps in to assist. Maya had a dream of becoming the first female Fire Chief of the Seattle Fire Department, but Chief Ross beat her to it. Maya became captain after she chose to get the job instead of speaking up for her emotionally unstable friend, Andy. She is ambitious but only sees the job and not the people around her. The demotion tested Maya, and she failed by doing things that are cruel and dangerous, sacrificing friendships and her marriage. Maya has been conditioned to ignore her pain, which started when she was three and saw her cousin lose a track race. Diane talked to Maya about her state of mind when she won gold at the Olympics, ignoring her pain to win the race despite spraining her ankle a few days before.

Meanwhile, Dean was trying to figure out how to deal with his father's death. He confided in Maya, who offered him some words of wisdom and support.
