The 2020 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards winners have been announced, with the coveted top prize being awarded to 'Terry the Turtle flipping the bird,' the captivating photograph of a grumpy turtle giving the finger. Mark Fitzpatrick, the owner of the photo, captured the remarkable moment while swimming near Lady Elliot Island in Queensland, Australia. The image features the sea turtle with its flipper raised, resembling an unmistakable gesture.
Describing the encounter, Mr. Fitzpatrick shared, "I was swimming with this turtle at Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef when he flipped me the bird!" In addition to winning the grand prize, the picture was also honored with the Creatures Under the Sea Award.
Fitzpatrick said he was amazed and happy to see everyone's reaction to his photo, "with Terry giving people a laugh in what has been a difficult year for many, as well as helping spread an important conservation message."
He continued, "I hope Terry the Turtle can encourage more people to take a moment and think about how much our incredible wildlife depends on us and what we can do to help them. Flippers crossed that this award puts Terry in a better mood next time I see him at Lady Elliot Island!"
