"Saint X," the new mystery drama series on Hulu, starts off with an intriguing premise and a real sense of suspense in its three opening episodes. Based on the novel of the same name by Alexis Schaitkin, the show follows Emily Thomas, who is still haunted and consumed by something that occurred in her past - the murder of her older sister, Alison, when they were on vacation at a Caribbean Island resort. The initial episodes of the series introduce us to the characters and mystery that will continue to unfold throughout the season, although the multiple timelines fail to give the plot any significant depth despite the intrigue they create. Check out its ending explained here!

#1. What Is The “Saint X” Series About?

Emily Thomas works as an editor of environmental documentary films, sifting through footage of wild animals and organizing it to her liking. Right from the start, however, something seems off about her. It turns out that she is still haunted by a traumatic event from when she was eight years old. At that time, Emily (then known as Claire), her parents, Bill and Mia, and her elder sister, Alison, had gone on vacation to a luxurious Caribbean resort. Emily was very attached to her sister and had a habit of scratching letters and words onto her hand with her own nails.
One night, Alison did not return to the room and was later found dead. Emily was never told what had actually happened to her sister, and to this day she is still confused and lost about the whole incident. Recently, Emily and her boyfriend Josh, a civil rights lawyer, have moved into an apartment in the Caribbean neighborhood of Flatbush. Though this hints that she has not been able to get over her experience and trauma related to the islands, every item which reminds her of the place terrifies her. Things take an unexpected turn when Emily seems to encounter a man who was linked to the death of her sister all those years ago.

#2. The Incident On The Caribbean Island: What we missed?

Since the Thomas family arrived at the island resort, a contrast in ideas between Alison and her father, Bill, became evident. Bill is a firm believer in capitalism, believing that life experiences should be bought with money. On the other hand, Alison, who attends Princeton, is exposed to topics regarding social inequality and civil rights, which makes her conscious of her privileged lifestyle. As a result, she strives to find a way to make a difference in the world, through changing her own life and being open to meeting new people. It is likely this that encourages Alison to be more welcoming to the local resort staff than anyone else.
Among these workers are two young men, Edwin and Gogo, who get close to the Thomas family. Edwin is particularly friendly and even flirtatious towards Alison, and it is revealed that Edwin has a habit of getting close with similar-aged girls who visit the resort. The young man also has a tendency to look for easy solutions, be it in life or with money, and he does not mind getting involved in illegal activities in order to do so. An older timeline, from when Gogo and Edwin were young kids at a school, is also shown, in which it is revealed that a cousin of Edwin was actually involved with a local criminal gang. It is, therefore, quite evident for Edwin to take the chance of earning large sums of extra cash when a guest at the resort asks for cocaine.

Although the drug is banned in the area and is therefore not easy to find, Edwin knows of a local gang that sells cocaine. The young man, therefore, intends to buy the drugs and sell them to the guest for a very high price, wanting to keep the profits for himself, and he proposes this plan to Gogo. Unlike the young man, his friend Gogo is quite reserved and shy, even from a very young age, since he used to struggle with stuttering speech as a child. Ever since Gogo was a kid, he had fallen in love with a classmate of theirs, Sara, and had even gotten physically intimate with her once as a teenager, and they two eventually had a baby from that interaction. As Gogo struggles to keep up with the monetary requirements of his disinterested partner Sara or their baby boy, he cannot really turn down Edwin’s offer, despite knowing that it involves a lot of unnecessary risks.
Alison is clearly taking advantage of her situation on the island, as she flirts with Edwin and Tyler and is unconcerned about the male attention she gets. Simultaneously, she reaches out to Olivia, who is envious of Alison's ability to attract male attention, and Alison is able to make a friend by revealing her own flaws. On the night of her disappearance, though, nobody knew anything was wrong as her parents believed she was with Tyler. Later that night, Roy arrests Edwin and Gogo and notices they are unusually quiet, as they are aware that they are guilty of something major. It turns out they had found cocaine, which Edwin had bought from a gangster, and Gogo was holding it for him. After some time, Alison's body is found in Faraway Cay and the mayor orders Roy to lie and say that her death was an accident to protect the island's business. This devastates Alison's parents, who leave the island without any answers as to how their daughter died.
