Whether or not you agree with them, as a collective, they reflect a more accurate cross-section of society and, in comparison to the Sam and Al program that was the original, they provide a refreshingly wide range of opinions and insights. Ben Song, MD, has been at the forefront. In the same vein as Sam Beckett, he possesses a brilliant mind and a generous spirit. It's in their upbringing that the difference may be seen. Ben was raised by his Korean immigrant mother, unlike Sam's nuclear family, who grew up on an Indiana farm.
In Season 1 Episode 6 of Quantum Leap, we learned that Ben's mother died suddenly while he was gone. Ben is in a jam since he jumped into the same domestic situation as Kamani Prasad. It's like getting a second shot at anything, finally allowing him to put things to rest with his mother.
It's worth noting that Ziggy isn't a perfect goal-predictor in a leap, so even if Ben had put out the fire, his family still wouldn't have been saved. Having been forced out of their home by Firebug Kathy, who was intent on collecting the insurance money on the building, and facing the prospect of Sonali having a heart attack and their family falling apart, the three of them sitting on the bench capture an authentic moment of misery.

Even while it seems improbable that Groupon and a random wedding party of Good Samaritans would work together to save the restaurant, the concept hits me in the feels. Indeed, it sounds like something out of a fairy tale, but happy endings are what we're all about. Having everyone pitch in to prepare and serve the food is a touching response deserving of the week's healthiest film. Ben wishes he could have made a distinction for his mother, and he does so in conversation with Sonali.
It's terrible but understandable that Sonali had to severely injure her hand and fall out cold before she would listen and consider an alternative to her chosen path. Ben gives a voice to many of the concerns immigrant parents and families face as they start a new life in the United States. The strain on the younger generation and the fortress of happiness built to protect against all perceived dangers (even those from inside the family) are depicted with a sincerity that would not have transferred to Sam Beckett's life experience had it not come from him.
Only Dr. Ben Song can jump and apply the necessary lesson to fix what was once wrong. Ian's confidence crisis counteracts the extreme rarity of the jump's other factors. Remember, Dottie could have picked anyone in the group, and the outcome of this catastrophe would have been the same. Since we've come to know the other team members, we know that they all want nothing more than to help us get Ben home.

Everyone would have gone through the same agony Ian did if Dottie had sketched Jenn, Magic, or Addison's faces; they would have questioned their choices and inner values. Things could have been a little different if it had been Janis, but we assume she had already ruled that out. We appreciate that Ian, not as the smart coder or a non-binary identifier, is the focus of this blizzard of inquiries.
They play a pivotal role as they are responsible for Ben and Addison. They are worried that they may make a choice that would cause harm to their closest friends. Magic realizes Ian's anxiety is sending them into a tailspin and that he is not the person Ian needs to see clearly. He can only force Ian out of headquarters and hope they can go to someone for help. Concernedly, I've been researching Rachel. We doubt we'll see her again this season, but there's always the chance she'll show up at the party Ben throws in the last chapter of his misadventure.
