Peaky Blinders Season 7's Release Date: Is Peaky Blinder Season 7 Happening?

Bad news for Peaky Blinders’ fans, as the critically acclaimed series won’t return for a Season 7, as reported by its creator. In January, Steven Knight, who was responsible for the entire franchise, announced that Season 6 was the last installment of the BBC drama. At the time, the pandemic was still going strong, so this seemed like a reasonable move by the studio.

However, while BBC won’t produce Season 7 of Peaky Blinders, Knight assured fans that the story will continue on a different path. Here’s what the producer had to say:

"’Peaky’ is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

It was later confirmed by Knight that the story of Peaky Blinders will resume as a theatrical release, and multiple spin-offs might follow if the movie turns out to be a success.

"COVID came along, and we lost a year of production. So we put our heads together and thought that it would be a good idea to do a movie instead of doing series seven."

Besides the ongoing pandemic at the time, there is one more reason that led to the conclusion of Peaky Blinders in Season 6, and that’s due to Helen McCrory’s passing. 

McCrory, who’s known for her role as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, plays the Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders. She passed away on April 16, 2021, due to cancer. The actress’s passing ultimately led to Polly Gray’s mysterious death in Season 6, which was revealed to have happened off-screen.

Following their mother’s death, the Shelby did everything they could to avenge her, and the two sons Michael and Tommy Shelby got into a serious war with each other. As a result, Michael was killed.

As mentioned above, BBC will produce a theatrical movie about the Shelby to replace Peaky Blinders Season 7. At the time the announcement was made, Knight also confirmed that the film was already in its early production stages.

Two years later, in March 2023, Knight gave fans a positive update that the movie is “coming and it’s soon”. He also teased that the upcoming film will take place during World War 2, and that the audience should “expect the unexpected.”

For now, there is no exact release date for the movie. 

With the upcoming movie still shrouded in mystery, it’s hard to say which new character will join the cast. However, as the Shelby’s story isn’t over just yet, we can expect actors such as Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, and Harry Kilton to reprise their respective roles.

Besides, it seems that Cillian Murphy’s Thomas Shelby is still the center of Knight’s plan for the next film. Prior to the pandemic, the showrunner revealed that he wanted to turn Thomas into a good person in the next season. He said in 2019:

“[Season 7] will tell a different story, where Tommy Shelby – who begins as this nihilistic, looking-out only for his family person – will be redeemed, and he will become good.”

With the story of the next movie focusing on the start of World War 2, we can see Thomas and his brothers joining the army, and there will be some major events that will change his way of thinking. After all, to see our protagonist having a prominent character development arc after all this time is what we want to see in the new title.

So far, there is no official trailer for Peaky Blinders movie yet, which is understandable, considering the project is still in its early stages. However, you can revisit the previous six seasons on Netflix and Prime Video.

While Peaky Blinders Season 7 isn’t happening, the story of the Shelby family will continue in the form of a movie. While the release date isn’t disclosed just yet, we can expect to see Cillian Murphy as the charismatic Thomas Shelby again very soon, and this time, on a big screen.
