Mortal Kombat 2's Release Date & Cast: All You Should Know About The Sequel
Great news for gaming fans, as Mortal Kombat 2 is coming to theaters soon, a couple of years after the first installment. 16 years after the first-ever live-action movie, Mortal Kombat made its way back to the big screen in 2021 and caused a massive uproar in the fandom.
It’s always good to see the extreme brutality and the action-packed sequences from the game being transitioned into the Mortal Kombat movies. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming sequel: its release date, its Kombatants roster, and more.
What's Mortal Kombat 2's Release Date?
For now, there’s no official release date for Mortal Kombat 2 just yet. However, as the production for the title is already underway, fans can expect to see the final product on the big screen in late 2024, most possibly in November.
The movie was being shot in Queensland, Australia, but was ultimately halted due to the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Earlier this June, the producer Todd Garner had this to say on Twitter, claiming that he and the crew had learned from the predecessor’s mistakes, while also confirming the progress.
“Off we go! I’m thrilled to start & trust me, we’ve listened. We’ve learned from the mistakes & are committed to making the best 'MK2' ('Mortal Combat 2') possible. I, 100% support everyone’s right to their opinion, but I have the right not to be abused & will block you. So…let’s have an amazing ride!"
What Is The Cast of Mortal Kombat 2?
Needless to say, the second installment will bring back some crucial characters from the first, including Cole Young, the Mortal Kombat universe’s protagonist. After getting the Dragon Mark, the Scorpion descendant had to join the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament. He’s portrayed by Lewis Tan.
We’ll also get to see the return of characters such as Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada). These are all iconic characters from the original game franchise who wield unique abilities and otherworldly superpowers.
The second movie will also introduce one of the most popular Kombatants in the series, Johnny Cage, who appears at the end of the first title. In the games, Cage is famous for his actor persona and quirky attitude even in battles. He’s played by Karl Urban, who’s best known for his role as Billy Butcher in The Boys.
Some other notable characters who’ll make their debut in Mortal Kombat 2 include Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Queen Sindel (Anna Thu Nguyen), and Edenian King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam).
Is There A Mortal Kombat 2's Trailer?
So far, there isn’t an official trailer yet for the upcoming movie, since it’s still in its early development stage. However, you can watch some stunning fan-made trailers here while waiting.
What Will Be The Movie's Story?
For now, there is little information about the upcoming Mortal Kombat title's plot. However, fans believe it will pick up the events from the first film instead of making a prologue movie. After all, Mortal Kombat 2 will feature the likes of Johnny Cage and Kitana as prominent characters, having introduced them at the end of the prequel.
Here’s what Jeremy Slater, the sequel’s writer, has to say about the direction of Mortal Kombat 2:
"It’s really fun so far. We’re about halfway through the script. I’m working really closely with the director and the studios, and the game guys, and I think—I can’t say anything about the actual story, but I think they definitely learned some lessons the last time around in terms of, ‘Here’s the stuff fans responded to, and here’s what people liked, and here’s the stuff that didn’t work out as well as we hoped.'So we’re really looking at this as a chance to take everything that worked in the first one and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable."
At the end of Mortal Kombat 1, the original protagonist Cole Young is rallying potent fighters from all realms for the upcoming tournaments, including Johnny Cage. The sequel might focus solely on Cole’s journey to find the fighters and his battle against the new enemy Shao Kahn.
It is also expected to set up the events for Mortal Kombat 3, the ultimate threequel where the Mortal Kombat tournament will take place.
Conclusion
Aside from the star-studded cast, there is very little information about Mortal Kombat 2, as the movie is still in its early stages of production. However, the show is promised to be better than the last. The inclusion of new characters such as Johnny Cage, Queen Sindel, and Shao Kahn is also something fans look forward to.
