Neytiri shuts down her emotions and transforms into a ferocious animal after Jake and Neytiri's oldest son, Neteyam, are shot and murdered by Quaritch's troops. The best way to describe what happens when he passes away is Jake encouraging her to keep a strong heart and resist breaking down and grieving right then. So she loses consciousness and obliterates every last soldier still aboard the boat, taking no survivors with her. Spider watches everything happen, appearing terrified and frightened as he hides to avoid being seen by her.
When Kiri is taken hostage by Quaritch, Neytiri seizes Spider and does the same thing, threatening to murder Quaritch until he releases her daughter. Everyone realizes at that point that Neytiri isn't playing a joke, especially after she says, "A son for a son."
Even though Quaritch claims he has no animosity against this horrific person-turned-Avatar, Spider struggles with this reality throughout the whole film. In addition to physically setting scores of homes on fire, Spider despises the fact that he is so bad. Quaritch's primary objective is to kill Jake Sully.
