Jeffrey Martin Lang, aged 21, from Hendersonville and Chattanooga, Tennessee, tragically lost to a drug overdose on November 2, 2010. A 2008 Hendersonville High School graduate, he was a junior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, pursuing a degree in biology. He was Taylor's childhood friend and confidant. Swift often expressed how Jeff was the first person she would sing her songs to, highlighting his profound impact on her life.
At the 2010 BMI Awards, Swift delivered a gracious acceptance speech upon winning Songwriter Of The Year, dedicating the award to Lang. She said: “It’s been a really emotional week for me…Yesterday, I sang at the funeral of one of my best friends… He was 21, and I used to play my songs for him first. So I would like to thank Jeff Lang.”
