Glen Powell, who played Hudner in Top Gun 2, did an excellent job depicting Devotion's tale of Jesse's death and Hudner's unsuccessful attempt to rescue him. After being shot down by a gunner hiding in the snow, Brown was forced to make an emergency landing in a valley.
After much effort, he gave up trying to free himself. Tom Hudner did land his plane within a hundred meters of Brown's, and the two men worked together to put out the fire in the jet's engine with snow. He tried in vain for 45 minutes to free Jesse from the debris. Instead of facing court-martial for shooting down his plane, Hudner was given the first Navy Medal of Honor of the Korean War.
