The Town Grassington Is The Real Life Version Of Darrowby

The Town Grassington Is The Real Life Version Of Darrowby
The town of Grassington steps in as Darrowby in the series. According to Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen, Grassington was transformed into a perfect representation of Darrowby. Shenton and her co-star Nicholas Ralph, who portrays James Herriot, spoke highly of the Yorkshire Dales scenery, describing it as picturesque, beautiful, and resembling a painting.
Nicholas Ralph, inspired by James Herriot's descriptions in the books, found the Dales to be captivating during his train journey. The landscape features rolling dales, stone walls dividing farms and crofts, scattered sheep, and silhouetted trees atop the dales.
For those interested in visiting, Grassington is around a five-hour drive from London or approximately four hours from Edinburgh. The area offers various accommodations for overnight stays. Alternatively, Herriot's real-life home and veterinary practice, located in Herriot Country in North Yorkshire, provide an opportunity to experience the authentic setting.
Herriot's home and veterinary practice have been restored to their original 1940s aesthetic. Visitors can explore historic rooms, engage with an interactive gallery designed for kids, and view a replica of a set from the original All Creatures Great and Small television series, which aired on the BBC in the '70s and '80s.

Picturesque Arncliffe

Picturesque Arncliffe
Nestled in the secluded Littondale, a tributary valley to Wharfedale, the village of Arncliffe stands out as one of the most idyllic villages in the Dales. Unsurprisingly, it has become a picturesque setting for several scenes in All Creatures Great and Small.
Portions of Darrowby, including the back of Skeldale House for car storage and scenes from the Darrowby Show in the first series, were filmed in Arncliffe. More recently, it featured as the location where James' parents disembarked from the bus from Scotland and stayed at the Falcon Inn, a spot retaining its real name and signage for the show.
Visitors can explore Arncliffe on a delightful circular walk starting from Kettlewell. The route takes you over the moors, offering breathtaking views of Littondale and Arncliffe, before descending into the charming village. The return leg guides you around Knipe Scar, providing panoramic views of Wharfedale. This circular walk is part of the six-night 'Wharfedale Ramble' walking holiday.

The Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw – The Drovers Arms Interiors
While the exterior shots of the Drovers Arms are captured in Grassington, the interior scenes take place in upper Wensleydale at the charming Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw. As of the latest update, the Green Dragon is temporarily closed due to unsustainable energy costs, but there are hopes for its reopening in the near future.
Hardraw is renowned for hosting the highest single-drop waterfall in England, located on private land with a small charge for path upkeep. Visitors can explore this natural wonder on a delightful short circular walk from Hawes. Additionally, Hardraw is a featured stop on the 'Wensleydale and its Tributaries' walking holiday. It serves either as the starting point for a long walk to the summit of Great Shunner Fell or as part of a more relaxed route to Hawes and Aysgill Force.
