For example, if children hear the garage door opening before their mother comes, they will associate the sound of the garage opening with her return. So, whenever they hear the garage opening, they are excited because they know their mother comes back home from work. Similarly, animals do learn something after they are exposed to a condition long enough.
Conditioning a pet, however, requires reinforcements, if you want your pets to learn more quickly and effectively. It means that you'll give them rewards to teach them to continue doing those behaviors again and again. Negative reinforcement will discourage your cats/dogs to do such behaviors. Instead, you should skillfully punish them when they do some behaviors we don't want them to exhibit.
Some owners condition their pets on purpose, but others don't think it is necessary to train their pets to do some particularly specific things. That's when accidental conditioning takes place.
