Redditors Support Guy Calling His Dog By 'Offensive' Name And Deciding Not To Change It, Here's Why
Giving your dog a name seems like a piece of cake, but it sometimes can be troublesome, especially when it is a sensitive name. A man has recently asked Reddit if he's wrong to call his dog 'Yankee' and unintentionally offend his sister's boyfriend.
The boyfriend who came from the South was upset by the name thinking it was a slur used against Americans and equating it as the n-words. He found it offensive and asked if OP (original poster) could replace it with another one. OP, in response, told him to grow up and stop overreacting to the issue. He refused to change the name.
Although OP's American friend agreed with him, he knew that the US is huge and it might be more of a regional thing. He started feeling guilty for not taking his sister's BF seriously and being conservative and selfish. Do you think that OP is wrong?
The word 'Yankee' is a sensitive term, carrying either positive or negative meanings. Its meaning can be geographical, but sometimes can be rather cultural. Some people like it, but others don't. There is an American baseball team called New York Yankees, but it's absolutely not an offense. In the 1700s, the famous British song "Yankee Doodle" was familiar to all people growing up in the US. It was performed by British military officers to mock the amateur "Yankee" soldiers of the American Colonies.
Despite its controversial meaning, Redditors believe that OP is not an a**hole for giving his dog such name. See their reactions here:
