23 Jump Street's Release Date, Cast & More: Is A 3rd Movie Possible Soon?
Is 23 Jump Street happening any time soon? It has been nearly 10 years since the last installment of the franchise, 22 Jump Street. The action-comedy show never fails to make us laugh our brains out with the incredible dynamics between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who play the main characters.
Recently, rumors have been suggesting that a third movie is finally coming after years of waiting. Is this true? Here’s everything you need to know about whether the threequel is possible.
Is 23 Jump Street Happening?
The side-splitting Jump Street franchise tells the story of two young public officers, who go undercover as high school and college students to investigate various cases. The latest installment, 22 Jump Street, hit the theaters back in 2014, and even teased the direction for a possible threequel.
In fact, a third movie was even officially announced back in September 2014 to be under development, led by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The sequel’s scriptwriter, Rodney Rothman, also returned with an “outrageous idea” in mind.
However, the project didn't come to fruition as the two directors were too busy with their schedules.
A Sony Pictures email leak back in 2014 even suggested that the third Jump Street movie would be a crossover with the sci-fi Men in Black franchise. However, after years of delay, the ambitious movie is finally removed from the slate.
In 2019, the duo Lord and Miller once again announced that 23 Jump Street was in development, though it wasn’t a crossover with Men in Black anymore. No further updates on the threequel have been released since.
What’s 23 Jump Street’s Release Date?
So far, there is no official release date for the much-anticipated threequel, as there are very few updates.
A female-led spin-off, however, is reportedly in progress and has finished its first phase of development. It is still unsure whether both Hill and Tatum will be in the spin-off or not. Sony also hasn’t released a release date for the movie, either.
23 Jump Street’s Cast: Will Jonah Hill And Channing Tatum Return?
Since there is very little information about the third Jump Street movie, its cast is still shrouded in mystery. However, the franchise won’t be the same without the dynamic duo Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, who play Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko respectively. To make 23 Jump Street happen, having the two actors reprising their roles is a must.
The only other character that appears in both Movies is Captain Dickson (Ice Cube), the foul-mouthed Jump Street project operator. Ice Cube has done a brilliant performance portraying the character, and fans want him to return as well.
Besides, the franchise also features popular performers such as Brie Larson, Amber Stevens, and Queen Latifah to play one-time supporting characters. The same pattern could happen in the third movie.
When asked about who he wants to see in 23 Jump Street, Channing Tatum revealed his answer to be either Brad Pitt or Daniel Radcliffe:
"Brad [Pitt] in ['The Lost City'] is hilarious. If we ever do 'Jump Street 3,' we have to—I’m telling you, he’s comic gold if you put him with the right character. I’ll tell you who’s probably my favorite actor now…Daniel Radcliffe."
What Would Happen In 23 Jump Street?
With the little information we got, it’s hard to pinpoint what would happen exactly in the third installment. However, if we have to guess, the plot of 23 Jump Street would heavily revolve around what Captain Dickson said at the end of the second movie.
At the end of the first movie, after the 21 Jump Street project turns out to be successful, Dickson immediately assigns both Schmidt and Jenko to a new mission, claiming: “You two are going to college!” And indeed, the two cops become college students in the sequel, busting yet another narcotic deal.
At the end, Dickson repeats his trademark sentence, this time sending the boys to medical school. Therefore, if 23 Jump Street comes to fruition, it will most definitely start with Schmidt and Jenko infiltrating a medical school this time.
As the crossover with Men in Black won’t happen, 23 Jump Street would be a more grounded movie just like its predecessors. Another interesting theory suggests that in the threequel, the dynamic duo will go undercover at a retirement home, just like in one of the final sequences of the previous film.

So far, there’s no trailer for the threequel, as we don’t even know if it’s done filming yet. While we wait for any good news, let’s check out this fan-made trailer by Dynatic Films, and look back to the last installment of the franchise below.
