The long-awaited sequel to the Avatar franchise will be released in theaters on December 16, 2022. The first two sequels were announced in 2010, with a 2014 release date hoped for. The film's demands resulted in eight theatrical delays over many years, with the most recent delay announced in June of 2020, bringing us to the current 2022 release date. The third installment is set to be released in December 2024, the fourth in December 2026, and the final film in December 2028. The second film will reportedly run for nearly 3 hours and 10 minutes, so it is shaping up to be quite the experience.

With much of Avatar: The Way of Water taking place among the underwater reefs of Pandora, we’re introduced to a new tribe of people on the planet, the reef-dwellers of the Metkayina.
Kate Winslet is Rona, a free-diver and part of the Metkayina tribe, and Cliff Curtis portrays Tonowari, leader of the Metkayina. The human side of the new character group includes Edie Falco as General Ardmore, the woman in charge of protecting the mining interests, Jemaine Clement as marine biologist Dr. Ian Garvin, Michelle Yeoh as Dr. Karina Mogue, and Oona Chaplin as a character named Varang. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet what sort of role Vin Diesel is playing in Avatar: The Way of Water, but we’re dying to find out.

Along with the title announcement, we got the first official synopsis which confirmed much of what we already suspected. It reads: "Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their planet." We also know that even though there are set to be three sequels after this one, each movie will be a stand-alone story with Landau saying that "the journey across all four movies will create a connected saga".
Into the mix will be the return of the RDA mining operation to Pandora, forcing Jake to take his family to the "perceived safe harbor" at the reef where they meet the Metkayina. To really capture the importance of water, Avatar 2 filmed its motion-capture scenes underwater. We also know there's been a bespoke sign language created for the movie by Baby Driver's CJ Jones, a deaf actor who's been hired to create a "new Na'vi sign language". is a website that provides you with Entertainment updates and creative ideas to brighten your day.
