Amazingly, September has been at the sanctuary for a really long time—about twenty years. However, something funny started happening last year. Caregivers noticed that whenever she came inside for her meals, she always carried unusual friends along with her: bees.

Everyone at the sanctuary was curious about the wonderful friendship between this lovely chimp and her bees, so they looked at the security camera videos and saw September hanging out near some flowers, trying to get along with the bees.

One day, September caught a bee, and it was surprising because she was very gentle with it. She'd let the bees crawl on her, and when they wandered too far or got out of reach, she'd put them back on her head or near her.

“We wondered where she was getting them until one day I witnessed her catch one,” Rebecca Muscat, September’s care technician, said. “She allows them to crawl across her body and will always gently put them back on her head or in her ear for safekeeping. When she lays down, she watches them crawl across her belly. When they start to wander too far or out of reach, she places them back at the top of her body.”

Her caregivers love watching her with these bees because it shows that chimpanzees, like September, are really smart and aware. Rebecca Muscat summed it up by saying, "The bees are a great example of how chimps are individuals with much more smarts than we usually think."

“September is a really amazing, intelligent, and unique chimp, and this is one example of why,” Muscat said.
