The movie takes place in the hayloft of a barn. A group of women — who recently learned the men in their patriarchal community drugged and assaulted them while they slept — are deciding between three possible options: Do nothing, stay and fight or leave.

The movie is based on a real-life story. The actual facts are beyond horrifying. Between 2005 and 2009, 150 women and young girls were drugged and then raped by men in their isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia. When the women woke up, they have no idea of what happened. However, noticing the blood on their sheets and legs, and missing underwear, they understood. The age range of the victims spanned from 5 to 65.
Normally, Mennonite communities handle such things secretly. But this time, the elders of the community got suspicious. They decided to follow one of the men at night and then catch him in the act. They reported the crime to the Bolivian authorities. Eventually, eight men were sentenced to 25 years in jail.

#2. Cast

Contributing to the success of the movie, the significant role of the cast is a must. Jessie Buckley stars as Mariche, a woman suffering horrific abuse by her husband. Claire Foy fares better as Salome, so infuriated by what has happened she attacked one of the men with a pitchfork, discovering she has murder in her heart. The great Judith Ivey plays Agata, and the equally great Sheila McCarthy plays Greta, the two elder women bringing wisdom and authority to the table. Michelle McLeod, Kate Hallett, and Liv McNeil play smaller roles but make very large impressions.
And then there's a “spinster” Ona, played by Rooney Mara. She was raped and got pregnant. She is curious and kind. She is even calm enough in her heart to forgive her rapist. The primary male character starred Ben Whishaw - a teacher of the Mennonite colony. As a result of the heinous crimes against the women of the community, he feels extremely guilty and heartbroken. He even attempts to kill himself but Ona stopped him just in time as they come to an arrangement.
