Why Did Netflix Cancel 'Inside Job' After Just One Season?

Netflix is starting 2023 with another cancellation. The adult animated series Inside Job is officially canceled on the streaming platform. Inside Job creator Shion Takeuchi confirms the animated series has been canceled and will not return for a second season on Netflix after all. What is the reason?

Inside Job Season 1, Part 1 premiered on Netflix on Oct. 22, 2021, consisting of 10 episodes. The show returned for Season 1, Part 2 on Nov. 18, 2022. Part 2 added eight episodes, thus bringing Season 1's grand total to 18. In June 2022, it was announced that in addition to the then-upcoming Part 2, Inside Job had officially been renewed for a full-length second season. However, that decision now appears to have been reversed.
This news is both a shock for fans of Inside Job and another reason to sigh angrily for fans of original Netflix animated content. The streaming service came under fire last year for doing a major mass layoff and canceling multiple animated projects, including titles like The Midnight Gospel, Q-Force, Bone, and much more. It’s never pleasant when a show gets the rug pulled out from under it before it can complete its story, especially when it has already laid the groundwork for so much more. Perhaps Takeuchi could shop the series to other streaming services similar to Lisa Hanawalt’s Tuca & Bertie, but considering that show’s fate at the hands of Adult Swim, is it even worth it? At this point, one thing is for sure: animation deserves better.

2. Why has ‘Inside Job’ been canceled?

Word of Inside Job being canceled first surfaced in a pair of now-deleted tweets by Chase Mitchell, one of the show's writers, on Saturday, Jan. 7. "I hate posts like this but our show got canceled on Friday," Mitchell wrote. "I dunno if I was allowed to say this but honestly that streamer does not care about animation anymore so who gives a shit." Inside Job fans on social media seem to be similarly frustrated by this revelation.

Why Netflix cancel Inside JobSource: Decider

Following murmurs of Inside Job's premature cancellation, series creator Shion Takeuchi confirmed the news in a statement posted to Twitter. "I'm sorry guys, it's true," Takeuchi wrote. "I'm heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel Season 2 of Inside Job. Over the years, these characters have become real people to me, and I am devastated not to be able to watch them grow up. Reagan and Brett deserved to get their ending and finally find happiness. And I would have loved to be able to share what was in store with you all."
Takeuchi concluded, "To everyone who watched, thank you for coming along on the ride. Even though I'm sad, it helps to know that there's people out there who cared just as much about these characters as me."
