Three adolescent robbers named Duela, Harper Row, and her brother Cullen broke into a safe at Wayne Tower and stole the pistol Joe Chill used to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne. Duela and Harper examine the firearm and determine it has recently been discharged. The noise outside the tower draws their attention to the pane where the terrifying word "Your Bat Is Dead" has been scrawled. We won't give the murderer any credit for originality, but that would certainly attract the attention of any Gothamite.
The three people hurry to the window and see someone lying on the ground below. Once Harvey Dent and the police arrive, they identify the body as Bruce Wayne's and immediately head to Wayne Manor. After realizing they've been set up, Duela and the others quickly leave. Before we can see how their escape pans out, the action returns to the party at Wayne Manor, where they knock out several pesky policemen and steal a squad car.
Turnbull's father has passed away, and Harvey has come to break the news that Bruce's true identity will soon be revealed to the public. Not knowing that his father was Batman adds to Turner's downward spiral. When he and his closest friend Stephanie hear the news, they waste no time looking for Bruce Wayne's Batcave and working on solving his murder. Turner delivers an emotional eulogy at Bruce's funeral, and brief clips of Duela, Harper, and Cullen getting arrested are intercut throughout his address.

They're all being questioned one at a time; during Duela's, we discovered her father was the Joker. Some background on Harper's abusive father is provided in her journal entries. According to Cullen's account, he and Harper thought their robbery would be their last. As Brody starts teasing Turner at school, Stephanie calms the situation. Stephanie later uses the Batcave computers to determine who hired Duela and the Row brothers to loot Wayne Tower.
A name pops up almost quickly for her search, but it's not the one she hoped to see: Turner Hayes. Turner was framed by whoever hired the crooks, and the police fell for the trap. When the police show up there, Turner is taken into custody. The latest disclosure that Bruce Wayne attempted to change the beneficiary on his will before his death further strengthens their case against him. Not ideal for Turner's reputation, but certainly, there was some interference behind the scenes.
Now Turner is locked up alongside Duela, Harper, and Cullen. Duela drops some knowledge on him about how the Joker abandoned her as a kid and how she despises him more than Batman does despite being related by blood. She then claims that Turner had a hand in setting them up, an assertion enthusiastically backed by Harper and Cullen. As their discussion turns physical, Detective Ford, the officer in charge of their investigation, is forced to step in.

Around this time, Harvey is thinking about his mayoral candidacy and how the Turner case may affect his plans. When they are taken away, Duela admits that the fight she instigated in their cell was staged. Turner is assured that his friend is not a murderer, and the two agree that they must remain together to live. On the police vehicle, Duela, Harper, and Cullen pick the locks on their handcuffs and start a brawl.
Together, they can overcome their captors and almost make their escape, but Turner's poor judgment allows their captors to regain the upper hand. Carrie Kelly, dressed as Robin and armed with some cool devices, appears out of nowhere and rescues the gang, allowing them to reorganize and head back to the Batcave. The premiere of Gotham Knights ends with several foreboding hints. The first is that the police responsible for transporting them to Blackgate had been enlisted by the Court of Owls, whose insignia had previously served as a hint. The second is the suspicion that Cressida, Turner's butler, is working with those responsible for Bruce's death.
