According to the official synopsis, Yellowstone is about the Dutton family, headed by John Dutton, who owns the largest continuously operated cattle ranch in the United States. Several competing entities, including a growing town, an Indian reservation, and the first national park in the United States, are always at odds with the ranch. Respect for the ranch has been acquired against shifting alliances, unsolved killings, fresh scars, and a general air of hard labor.
Wendy Moniz, Jen Landon, and Kathryn Kelly, all from Mo Brings Plenty, have been upgraded to series regulars. Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, and Gil Birmingham are the new cast members for Season 5.
In addition, Jacki Weaver, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Red Silverstein will all be back for the upcoming season, as will Josh Lucas as a younger version of John Dutton. The talented ensemble will soon be joined by newcomers Kai Caster, Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay, and Dawn Olivieri.

In fact, "Yellowstone" was written by Sheridan and John Linson. John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, and Stephen Kay served as producers and executive producers, respectively, for the picture.
In her review of the first half of Season 5, the television reviewer for IndieWire, Kristen Lopez, mentioned that Costner's screentime has been restricted due to John's job as governor. Lopez said that "Yellowstone" has always given the impression that John Dutton is an antihero, but in this scene, he or Costner merely seem exhausted and unyielding. "He wants to be governor only to fulfill his goals, and it will be interesting to see whether Sheridan utilizes that to investigate what is occurring in the administration of the United States right now."
