What Happens With Miles Morales And Gwen Stacy In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse? Are They A Couple In The Movie?

There is a lot to expect in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, for example, The Spider Society, new villain The Spot, and of course, Gwen Stacy’s return as Spider-Gwen. Fans were not disappointed, as the Earth-65 version of Wall-Crawler not only makes her appearance in the sequel, but she also has a much more crucial role in the story. In fact, the whole first 15 minutes of Across the Spider-Verse is dedicated to Gwen, which delves deep into her struggle to fit in, her relationship with Captain Stacy, and how she gets to meet Miguel O’Hara and joins the Spider Society.

With Gwen’s return as an important character, fans from the first film are dying to know how her relationship with Miles develops onward. We all know how our protagonist has a huge crush on her in the prequel, but since Gwen has to return to her own dimension, their romance hasn’t had the chance to blossom, yet. So, are the two finally a couple in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse? Let’s find out.

#1. Miles and Gwen’s relationship after Into the Spider-Verse.

Miles's first encounter with Gwen wasn’t a very romantic one, as the former fails to impress with his “mature” vibe. The two don’t meet much until the latter half of the film, and when they do, their interactions are quite awkward. However, Gwen acknowledges Miles’s abilities and resolve, so they officially become friends at the end of the movie, with some slight hints about a possible development in their relationship in the sequel.

#2. The two finally meet again in Across the Spider-Verse, but…

At the start of the movie, Miles is shown to have a lot of things going on in his mind: the struggle with his superhero works, his relationship with his parents, or his decisions regarding his future school and job. Therefore, Gwen’s unexpected appearance in his room is a lifesaver. The two exchange some friendly banters, and then swing across the city as a way to ease the boy’s mind.

However, it turns out Gwen is there in Miguel’s order, to discover the anomaly that The Spot has caused in Earth-1610. Miles is devastated when he finds out the truth, and their just-blooming relationship starts to worsen after he learns that Gwen and Peter B. Parker was keeping the secrets of canon events from him. The two don’t get to reconcile in the end, as the protagonist is captured in Earth-42 by his own evil counterpart, who becomes the Prowler, while Gwen is rallying a team of Spider-People to help save Miles.

#3. Gwen is afraid about the idea of getting together with Miles because...

During their swings across the city, Miles tries to spark a conversation about their relationship in a roundabout way, while trying to grab her hand.,. Gwen rebukes by stating that while in every other universe, while Gwen Stacy always fell for Spider-Man, their relationship never ended on a happy note. By this sentence, the Earth-65 Spider-Woman implies that something bad might happen if she starts a relationship with Miles, and she’s not ready to lose yet another friend.

Besides, an inter-dimension relationship is very difficult to maintain, as it will disrupt the balance of the universe (which Miguel is strongly against), and staying in another world for too long will cause “cellular decay”, as mentioned by Olivia Octavius in the first movie. Gwen has all the right reasons to be afraid.

#4. But Miles is not ready to give up.

Gwen’s statement causes Miles to retract his hand, but then he comes up with an answer that surprises Gwen: “There is a first time for everything, right?” Hearing Miles’s answer, Gwen lets out a smile of relief and nudges her shoulder against his. This might be a good potential sign that shows while Gwen isn’t ready because of her losses, she thinks about Miles differently, and might even have romantic feelings for the younger Web-Slinger.

Besides, the two’s interactions in the movie give off a different vibe from the first movie. Both Miles’s parents and Pavitr Prabhakar acknowledge that something is going on between the two, with the latter even dubbed “romantic tensions”. So, not all hope is lost for Miles, I guess.

#5. Will they finally become a couple in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?

Obviously, after all they’ve been through, Miles still has his feelings about Gwen intact, which shows in how he got jealous of Hobie, aka Spider-Punk, for being so close to his crush. Gwen, on the other hand, also showed some hints about her feelings about Miles being mutual, instead of thinking of him like a little brother. Therefore, as long as nothing tragic will happen like Gwen’s foreshadowing, it’s likely they’ll end up a couple at the end of the next movie.

Do you think Gwen and Miles will become a couple at the end of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse? Why so? Let us know your thoughts in the comment.
