“We Could Not Believe It”: Family Was Shocked To Find Bear Hibernating Under Deck
Many animals endure harsh, dark winters by hibernating instead of hunting for food or moving to a warmer climate. During this time, they frequently slow their metabolisms in order to save energy. Besides, hibernacula are often hidden, insulated, enclosed spaces that frequently have "just in case" food supplies. And although a human house would seem to be the ideal location for animals to hibernate, it is uncommon to see animals pick this location for their long sleep. The following situation is absolutely shocking: a black bear has been spotted hibernating under the outdoor deck of a Connecticut family.
In January of this year, Vincent Dashukewich and his girlfriend were in their backyard when their dog started growling at the pool. When Dashukewich went to investigate, he suddenly spotted a black bear lying underneath the pool’s deck.
"I didn’t really have a thought, I was just kind of shocked," Dashukewich shared in an interview. "He was staring right at me. I didn’t know what to do, I just wanted to make sure my dog got inside safe."
"He’s been super chill, I’ve gone out to check on him a few times and he hasn’t really moved," Dashukewich has said of the bear, whom he’s nicknamed "Marty."
Dashukewich’s sister, Tyler, then created a video of the bear and posted it on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, and thousands of people have left comments, some giving their advice.
"They’re like, ‘Go feed it, make him a pet.’ But I’m going to be realistic," Tyler Dashukewich said.
"It’s pretty divided so far, half the people are like, ‘This is the scariest thing ever,’ and the other half is like, ‘Can you pet it? It looks so cuddly.’ So we’re trying to keep our distance, but he is cute," said Vincent Dashukewich.
"Black bears are generally shy and secretive and usually fearful of humans." However, if they regularly find food near houses and areas of human activity, they can lose their fear of humans," the agency wrote, noting that "unlike grizzly bears, black bears are seldom aggressive toward humans, even when cubs are present."
The organization does, however, caution against ever attempting to approach or feed a bear close to your home since bears will defend themselves if a person comes too close. In the event that a black bear approaches you, DEEP suggests that you take the initiative by yelling or waving your arms before backing away gently.
