This Wombat Patiently Waits At Her Rescuer's Feet Every Morning For The Most Adorable Reason
Brigitte Stevens never starts her day alone. She is now accustomed to the lovely companion of a certain little friend every morning. That friend of hers is Issy-a rescue wombat.
“She was starving to death due to the state of her environment,” Stevens said to The Dodo. “I didn't even know if she was a girl or a boy, but I quickly had a feeling her name was Isabel.”
“We have a big sanctuary and I didn't want to leave Issy alone when she clearly wanted company,” Stevens explained. “So I decided to take her with me in a baby sling.”
“She knows when I go to put my shoes on that I am about to leave,” Stevens said. “She sits at my feet, sometimes twirling around with her head up, for me to pick her up to take her with.”
Wombats often shun humans, but when Issy came to the refuge, she was unusually calm and willing to let Stevens take care of her. “She acts like she has always lived here,” Stevens said.
“I love that she feels so safe with me,” Stevens said. “She just seems so grateful.”
The young wombat will never be hungry or lonely again since she will spend the remainder of her life at the refuge. She's overjoyed to have a place to call home and a cozy sling to call her own.

Stevens is the founder of the Wombat Awareness Organisation, which provides a safe haven for wombats who are unable to survive in the wild. Issy was found hungry, wounded, and alone by the animal advocate around a year ago while scouting about South Australia. Severe climate change has made it extremely difficult for many animals, including wombats, to thrive in the region in recent years. Stevens quickly understood that the tiny wombat couldn't make it on her own and required her assistance.“She was starving to death due to the state of her environment,” Stevens said to The Dodo. “I didn't even know if she was a girl or a boy, but I quickly had a feeling her name was Isabel.”

Safe in the refuge, Issy quickly grew close to Stevens and wanted to accompany her everywhere she went, so Stevens devised a solution.“We have a big sanctuary and I didn't want to leave Issy alone when she clearly wanted company,” Stevens explained. “So I decided to take her with me in a baby sling.”

Issy now quietly waits at Stevens' feet every morning until it's time for their stroll. The clingy wombat knows that she will get to roll up comfortably like a baby inside the sling that was prepared just for her, and then be carried around by her mom wherever she goes.“She knows when I go to put my shoes on that I am about to leave,” Stevens said. “She sits at my feet, sometimes twirling around with her head up, for me to pick her up to take her with.”

Issy probably likes the sling since it reminds her of her mother's pouch. It seems that she sees Stevens as her new mom too.“I love that she feels so safe with me,” Stevens said. “She just seems so grateful.”
