The Last of Us Live-Action Will Not Make The Same Mistake Like Game of Thrones

The cast of The Last of Us will carry the significant weight of the characters they are portraying, and especially how the directors decide to play out the story as a whole, are some of the big questions that are still circling around anxious fans ahead of the highly anticipated season premiere of The Last of Us on HBO. Happily, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have reassured viewers that they would remain steadfastly faithful to the source material and not veer into any creative, off-base ideas, according to a report.

The Same Mistake Like Game of Thrones

Despite recent and very much still circulating rumors of a potential third installment in The Last of Us game franchise, Druckmann, current co-president of game developer Naughty Dog and a major contributor to the original games, made it clear that they would categorically not stray outside the narrative scope of the first two released games.

“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games...We won’t run into the same issue as ‘Game of Thrones’ since ‘Part II’ [of the game series] doesn’t end on a cliffhanger."

Druckmann is referring to the intense creative disputes that developed at a particular time with Game of Thrones, HBO's premier fantasy program. The next book in the series hadn't yet been completed by the time the fifth season of the television series was due (and still hasn't), so showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss took it upon themselves to plan the rest of the plot, better or worse.

Unfortunately, Martin said that Benioff and Weiss completely excluded him from every succeeding season till the end rather than at least including him in that creative process. This obviously resulted in one of the most divisive finales in television history, which sparked widespread outrage from viewers. Clearly unwilling to repeat such errors, Druckmann and Mazin will not make an effort to offer anything unique to their source material.

Druckmann and Mazin have pledged to stay to predetermined content and have also mentioned that there would only be two seasons of the program, with the first season covering the length of the first game and the second season covering the entirety of the second game. Some fans will agree that sticking to a strict and succinct two seasons is the best idea, while others may bemoan the lack of time allotted for careful character development and world exploration in a story that is so dear to so many people's hearts. Fans have a plethora of strong opinions on how the story as a whole can best play out.

Druckmann has promised, though, that their project will put a lot of emphasis on the relationships between each character and keep the experience very much focused on the human side rather than heading in the direction of an action-packed, monster-filled blockbuster like the Resident Evil film series.
